    Beeps (Word 97)

    Hi,

Is there any way to keep Word 97 (running under Win 2000) to quit beeping when it does things like ask me if I want to save the changes before closing a file? I have sounds unchecked on the Options - General tab card, but that doesnt seem to do it. There is no sound card in the machine, and I want to limit beeping to "new mail received" and nothing else.

    Thanks for any help,

The "Do you want to save changes" dialog is a message box with an exclamation mark. The corresponding sound is a Windows setting, not a Word setting. Open the Sound control panel (Start | Settings), and set the sound for Exclamation to (None). Don't forget to click OK.

Just to add one thing to Hans' suggestion. I get startled (irritated) by some of the sounds Windows uses. While you're in the sounds dialog box, you can go though & change the sounds. I found the most irritating one to be the "critical stop". If you change this to the Jungle theme, it will alert you without waking up the neighborhood.
    Cheers,

I followed the suggestions in the last two posts, and set all sounds to (none)--except "benachrichten

    Hi Ed:
I'm not sure. I'm also don't understand why you are getting a sound when you get a prompt to save a file. I don't recall that ever happening (but it could be just my memory). <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

You might post in the Windows forum for your operating system, but first, try this:
    1. Open regedit (Start/Run & type regedit & press enter).
    2. Navigate to
    HKEY_CURRENT_ USERAppEventsSchemesApps
    3. Under Apps, see if you have anything for MS Word. In Windows 98, there will be entries for Default, Explorer & few others, but not Word. If you do see one for Word, see if there is a sound specified under DefaultCurrent under it.

Hopefully, someone else may have a better idea.

    Hi,

I looked in the Registry as suggested: there is no entry for Word under HKEY_CURRENT_ USERAppEventsSchemesApps...this whole thing may have something to do with the fact that there is no sound card, just the internal speaker.
