Shortcut keys not working

Now this is strange. Yesterday my shortcut keys ctrl-c (copy) and ctrl-v (paste) were working just fine. All of a sudden they are not working anymore. I have rebooted with no success. Does anyone know what may have happened and how to fix this problem?

I did not realize how much I use these keys until now (

Thanks,

Dave.

Re: Shortcut keys not working

open regedit and locate this key

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionPoliciesExplorer

Look to see what if NoSaveSettings is set to 0 or 1. If it is set to 1 then this is probably the reason the settings are not being saved when you shut down Windows. Set it back to 0 and this will allow for the settings to be saved when exiting Windows.

Possibly a keyboard problem...?

Is this in all applications, or specific ones?

Does using the right_mouse Copy and Paste function work?
Can you try using Ctr+Ins (for copy) and Shift+Ins (for paste).

Re: Shortcut keys not working

This is occuring in all applications.

The right mouse copy and paste is working fine.
Ctr+Ins (for copy) and Shift+Ins (for paste) works great, thanks for the alternative.

I am about to check the registry as suggested by cowboydawg and will report back.

Thanks,

Dave.

I looked at the registry and not being an expert this is what I have found...see attached pic (I hope).
The key you mention does not exist in this section.

Re: Shortcut keys not working

Any new software installed recently? It almost sounds as if something has snaffled the keyboard combination.
Can you try a combination of Ctrl-C/Shift-Ins and Ctrl-Ins/Ctrl-V to check if it is only one of your original Ctrl+C/V that is not working?

(This isn't on a laptop, perchance?)

Re: Shortcut keys not working

The combinations of Ctrl-C/Shift-Ins and Ctrl-Ins/Ctrl-V did not work.

No, I am not using a laptop at the moment.

Yesterday I did install a new version of Turbo Lister for use on eBay. This is the only thing installed recently.
I was using my laptop yesterday working on some html files and then copied them back to my PC. I wish I could remember if the shortcuts were working previous to my using the laptop. When you are not expecting things to go wrong you don't pay attention until after it happens (

I need to leave for awhile, I will respond to any further comments/suggestions this evening.

Thanks for your help,

Dave.

Re: Shortcut keys not working

That key normally has that Dword Value. You can create that Dword Value and set the Binary Data Value as it shows above. If you don't know how we can walk you through it, but I can't say for sure that will fix your problem, but it won't hurt anything eather. I did read a couple articles were they had your exact problem and they ran Win98 as an "upgrade" option and loaded over the top of the existing Win98 and it fixed thier problem. What that does when you put your Win98 CD in and choose the "UPGRADE"option is that it replaces any missing files and such and leaves everything else in tacked. I have had to do it before myself and it always worked great for me, kinda like a tuneup. I have even done it with WinXP and have never had anything but good come from it.

Re: Shortcut keys not working

Add the 'NoSaveSettings' registry field to the following registry location:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionPoliciesExplorer

1) Open the Registry Editor.
2) Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionPoliciesExplorer
3) From the 'Edit' menu, select 'New', and select 'DWORD Value'.
4) Type the following for a value name:
NoSaveSettings
5) Double-click the new 'NoSaveSettings' entry. (The 'Edit DWORD Value' dialog box appears.)
6) In the 'Value data' text box, change the value to 1.
7) Click 'OK'.
8) Close the Registry Editor.

Do you have any clipboard extenders? They sometimes can interfer with copy/paste. I use Smartboard 2000 & that sometimes happens to me. However, closing & reopening the application will fix it.

Re: Shortcut keys not working

I added the additional registry key but it does not seem to have done anything. I still can't use the 2 shortcuts.

I also reinstalled WIN98SE and this also had no impact. I have a WIN98SE CD which does not have an upgrade option.

Still confused,

Dave.

Hi Phil,

Thanks for your note also. I am not using any clipboard extenders.

Re: Shortcut keys not working

Leif,

I starting thinking about what you said "Possibly a keyboard problem...?"

That is exactly what it is. The left Ctrl button is not working but the right Ctrl button does. I never would have thought to check the right one since I never use it.

Sorry to have wasted everyone's time.

Dave.
