Corrupt Word File on Laptops (Word 2000)

I just got this email asking me to re-create a word document.
"Would you be willing to help me with a Word document? I have a status document that I produce for a weekly meeting. The current file has become corrupt (on laptops running Windows 2000, the file causes a blue screen whenever it is printed)."
It's not really would I be willing to help, but get it done soon. Oh well.
It's a simple 10 page document with a table on each page with some merged cells and headers and footers. That's it.

Any idea on what's corrupting it, or a way to fix it? Guess I'll get to re-creating.

    Thanks,
    Justin K.

A couple of things you can try

Copy everything except the final paragraph mark and paste to a new document
Save as RTF, close, open, save as .DOC

Neither of those things worked. I even tried combining the two.

    Thanks tho

    Lets keep trying...

Sometimes saving as HTML clears up table problems.

Hm, I just tried that and I lost a lot of the formatting on the document when I saved it back to a .doc.

I just recreated the file and it works now.

    Thanks,

This may come too late.... but you might go back to the original file and check to see whether the problem really is with a Document Template (DOT).

From time to time I've run into problems with documents becoming corrupt as I shuffle them back and forth between my laptop and our server. This happened again the other day, and for some reason, it occurred to me to check the attached template. When I cleared up problems with the template, the document opened without error.

    Regards,

    Don

This is late, but a couple of points should it reoccur in the future. If you have section breaks in the document, copy & paste each section separately, NOT including the section break. You'll have to reset margins, etc. Also, if you have tables, convert the table to text & then back to a table again. Tables corrupt more easily than text & you mentioned that you had merged cells.
