Favorites aren't listed (IE 5.5)

My favorites are no longer listed when I click on the Favorites icon. History is no problem. Tried hard to correct on my own with following results:
1. using "Find" from Start button and "open" - nothing happens.
2. using MS Explorer:
- when left click on folder, cursor bumps up to C: (hard drive) contents list;
- when right click on folder and then left click "explore", bumped to C: as above; if left click "open", nothing happens!

When I try to save a URL, the dialogue box comes up as usual and says it saves URL in Favorites folder, and says it's already there if I try to resave it, but --- can't find list anywhere!!

Is there a simple solution to this (I'm a non-techie!)? Hope there is and that someone can help me with this!

(Edited by IreneLinda on 12-Jun-03 20:43. )
Thanks. Have printed out article. Will give it a try and let you know if it works!

Linda

PS All right! That worked in that I tried saving a Web page and I could finally see it listed under favorites! Less successful was my attempt to copy "oldfav" to new Favorites, as MS article advised. Once again, in MS Explorer, when I tried to open "oldfav" to copy pages one at a time, as advised by article, I was bounced up to the new Favorites folder and couldn't find any of the old favs. Should I just assume they are gone for good, delete that folder and start again?

Thanks for the easy to follow solution!

Re: Favorites aren't listed (IE 5.5)

Hi Linda:
I don't know if this will work, but we can give it a try. Go to a DOS prompt again & this time type (with enter after each one:
cd windows
cd oldfav DIR

If this lists files, etc., then at least they're there.
XCopy *.* "C:windowsfavori~1"

Make sure that you change to the oldfav directory first. Also, make sure you put in all the backslashes & quotes. That's XCopy star dot star space. If this causes corruption in your new favorites folder, yuck. You'll have to recreate it again. Then you can try copying 1 file at a time, but....may not be worth the time.
Cheers,

Linda--

Ed by SMBP: Sorry Linda, I just saw you are using Win 95, and SFC wasn't introduced until Win 98.

One more thing might help you I forgot to mention--by all means run System File Checker by putting "sfc /scannow" space before slash without quotes in your run box or at the dos prompt. No downside to doing this at all. It will ask you for the XP CD probably, and you may have to hit "retry" along the way several times--to keep the progress bar moving. This might replace files that Favorites need to work properly--takes on average about 20-30 minutes.

Good luck,

SMBP

Re: Favorites aren't listed (IE 5.5)

Linda--

To try to fix this further: Ed by SMBP: I see now the OS is Win 95

1) McAfee products can corrupt Favorites so can Norton System Works "Registry Doctor"--make them appear missing or not work.
2) Free download Tweak IE 3.1 has a fix favorites feature under Backup and Restore.
3) Ck. Tools>Internet Options>that "Display Personalized Favorites Menu" is unchecked.
4) Thread: Favorites Not Working 60 Articles Left Task Pane
5) Phil's fix looks interesting--I saw a number of KB's that involved renaming but none was an exact fit.
6) From Kelly's Korner under F/"Can't Find Favorites":
Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/View. Select Show hidden files and folders. Then go to Cocuments and SettingsUser NameFavorites. Right click/unhide.
7) Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionExplorerShellFolders

Look in the right pane for the Favorites value. Note the full path to the Favorites folder.

This value should be a REG_SZ value type, not a REG_EXPAND_SZ type. If its the latter of the two, right click Favorites and select Delete. Then right click in the right pane and select New, String value and name it Favorites. Double click the new entry and enter the path to the Favorites folder (you should have noted it, above).

Phil,

Thanks. Between you and SMBP, I can't believe how much help I have!!

Will work through your solution first and then try those suggested by SMBP. One of these helpful solutions will surely do the trick!

Once it's corrected, I'll outline the steps I followed - the ones that worked! - here FYI.

Again, many thanks for the plentiful hints and support.

Re: Favorites aren't listed (IE 5.5)

Phil and SMBP,

Progress (or lack thereof!) to date:
1. Phil - found the oldfav directory so the files are there - great! Tried the copy procedure several times with "bad command or file name" result every time. Here is exactly what I typed after the prompt: "C:WINDOWSOLDFAV}XCopy no space star dot star space "C:windowsfavori~1", both quotes typed in. I then hit "enter" and kept getting that bad command response.
I also tried to move the old fav folder into the new favorites while in Explorer, but still couldn't open it when I did.
Can you tell what I'm doing wrong here?

2. SMBP
I did have McAfee suite and, although I've removed it, there may still be bits of it around.
Still have to download your #2 and #4, but here's what happened with others:
#3) No such option under my Internet Options!
#6) Again, no "folder options" under Tools in my Explorer. Did find a "View" tab under "Options" and the "Show all files" box was checked. I couldn't figure out how to get to "Cocuments and Settings" to try the rest of this suggestion. It wasn't under MS Explorer nor in "find files and folders".
#7) Again, I couldn't figure out how to get to HKEY_CURRENT_USERS etc. and so didn't get any further in this one.
I will go and try the links you suggested now, but did want you to know how I'd done so far in case you can help redirect me on the ones that didn't work for me. Or is all this because of having Windows 95?

Thanks to you both once again. We are making progress!

Re: Favorites aren't listed (IE 5.5)

Sorry. When I wrote that, Linda, I hadn't noticed above that you were running 95. I don't have experience with Windows 95, so I'm not sure how Windows Explorer is laid out in 95--Fixing Favorites in 95 might become a distinctly different problem. However, I would think your IE toolbar in 5.5 would be the same no matter the OS. Possibly not.

Re: Favorites aren't listed (IE 5.5)

I'd misunderstood your edited note re. when you'd realized we used 95. I'll try the links you sent earlier and continue to play around in IE 5.5 to see if I can find commands similar to those you mentioned. At least now I can see new favourites! And may yet be able to determine how to open the old ones.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Linda:
I've been away a few days. What you typed is wrong. You have a "}" that doesn't belong there. You typed:
"C:WINDOWSOLDFAV}XCopy no space star dot star space "C:windowsfavori~1"

Just go to your OLDFAV folder by doing
CD OLDFAV from Windows folder

Then just type:
XCopy *.* "C:windowsfavori~1"

In fact, copy & paste it.
Cheers,

Re: Favorites aren't listed (IE 5.5)

Phil,

Thanks for getting back to me. The problem is that I have truly messed up my computer! In trying to correct that favorites file, I went into some of sites suggested by SMBP and did something horribly wrong! My computer now seizes ALL the time whenever I attempt anything with it.

Only today, by borrowing an old laptop, have I managed to get into the help board to find your June 20 message! I'm afraid that things are so messed up here on my 6 year old computer (Win95, Office 97), that we are looking into upgrading our whole system!

All that said, if I can make the computer work, I will try your fix. And let you know.

Many thanks for your help!

Linda

PS Nope, can't get your suggestion to work. The "}" should have read a ">" which is the symbol after the OLDFAV> after which I then typed in what you suggested only to receive a "bad command" message each time! Methinks the system is toast!

Re: Favorites aren't listed (IE 5.5)

Linda--

I hope nothing I led you to caused you a problem. With 95 almost an 8 year old operating system, there are far less resources to support it these days, and I would think you would have to take some special care to make sure things are compatible with it. My links were Kelly, MSN Groups, and the home page of a Tweak IE utility which would be specific to the version of browser.

If you go to Windows XP, it will be one of the better things that will happen; and you all will like it in many ways over 95--I just hope you can back up what's important so you can have it when you migrate.
