In the header and footer, fields update automatically with a repaginate. eg go to normal view and then to page layout view and they will have been updated.

Using code to do the job is simple enough - ActiveDocument.Fields.Update

    Re: Footer Information (Word 2000 / SP3)

    Andrew,

Thanks but there still must be some setting somewhere that causes this to happen automatically because on the machine where it works by reflecting the new filename and date I am not doing anything differently than on the machine where it does not automatically reflect the new filename and date.

Where would I put that code you gave and how would it be activated? Is it a Macro that I should record within the Normal.dot? Right now both machines are even using the exact same "Normal.dot" to run Word 2000?

    Thanks again.

Have you checked the setting of "Update Fields" in the Print tab of Tools | Options...?

    Re: Footer Information (Word 2000 / SP3)

    Hans,

No but I will. I can't check on the one that doesn't update as I want but the one here that does update the filename has that box unchecked. It seems that it should be checked to make sure the filename updates, doesn't it? I'll check the other machine when I get to its location later today.

    Thanks.

    Hans,

Yes I have checked both computers now and they are set the same but still the one computer doesn't update the filename and date. I believe I got to be missing some setting somewhere.

    Thanks.

Is it possible that the fields have been locked against updating? Select them and press CTRL+SHIFT+F11 to unlock.

I don't know how that would have happened but I will give your advice a try.

Strange as it may seem I think I have accidentally corrected the filename and date updating problem. I searched the WEB and followed all the advise I got here and nothing made my Word document update and reflect the new filename and show the date that new filename was created. I checked all the boxes in the options and copied a macro from MS knowledge base that was supposed to make the field names update any time a new file was corrected. Still it did not work until I accidentally deleted the

I think that your field was corrupt. I have seen fields act weird, but act correctly when the identical field is replaced. Can't tell you why. The macros that you have merely update fields upon open or creating a new document respectively. However, these fields in the header/footer should update upon opening anyhow. I'll bet they update correctly now even if you delete both macros.

    Re: Footer Information (Word 2000 / SP3)

    Hi Phil,

I will try what you say but this was not an isolated incident. It happened to 5 "shell documents" I created to start other documents with. Plus that friend of mine that was trying to help me figure out this problem was able to duplicate the problem on his machine (his was Windows 2000 and mine is XP Home) and he never was able to get the footer fields to update. However, he did not put the macro into his Normal.dot as I did.

I think, just so I don't mess anything up now that is working, that I will rename the Normal.dot and let word recreate a new one and then try what you suggest. Then if anything goes wrong (Murphy's Law) I should be able to rename the old Normal.dot and be back in business. I think!!!!!!!!!!!

    Thanks.

    Phil,

You were correct, at least as far as my machine was concerned. With a new Normal.dot with no macro attached to it and the filename and date placed into the footer area of a new document the document updated to reflect a new filename when the current one was changed using the

Not sure, but you did say that you had a "shell" document that was used to create the other documents. That could have been corrupt, even if you placed fields in it afterward. All I can say is that from time to time, I've had fields, Find/Replace, & other features act strangely. Many times closing & restarting Word (after deleting all temp files) solves the problem. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>
