Screen Position won't stay the way I want it

Loungers

I am having a problem with my Windows XP pro, and the way its displaying the screen.

OK each time I position the display screen the way I want it to be, and then turn off the PC, the next time I start it up, I have to fiddle with the screen again.

Is this a monitor issue or a Video Card issue, or a Windows XP issue?

Thanks

Sounds like a Monitor problem to me. If your Display settings { color quality, resolution & Refresh rate } are the same when you turn it on as it was when you turned it off, I wouldn't think it would be your Video Card. If those are changing, it's the Video Card or Drivers. The monitor is responsible for holding your screen position. But, if you change Resolution, Color Quality or Refresh Rate then you will have to use Monitor Controls to adjust your screen back to position to fill the screen and align. But if none of those things are changing , the screen should remain in place were you left it.

Last year I had two 14" VGA monitors do that to me in a short time. It was the monitors, they were old. I replace them with 1998 15" Dell monitors and the problem was solved. Thus in my case it was the monitor.

Is it possible that, after setting the height, width and position, you need to choose a "save user setting" or something like that?

Sorry for the delay in answering you, but I was waiting for something that never happened, get a notification that a message was added to the tread.

OK let me try and give an example. Say you start up your PC, running Windows XP Pro, and you fiddle with the Monitor controls, that are on the monitor, and you position the TaskBar to be in the middle of the screen.

Not an ideal situation, but for this example it works.

Turn off your PC, and monitor and then restart.

The TaskBar should be in the middle of the screen... . Well mine does not stay where I place it, and I want it to be the way I last positioned it, at the end of the bottom of the screen, the usable area of the screen as maximum as possible, and what have you.

Any ideas?

OK I will verify that none of the stuff you mentioned are changing, and get back to you, but I am not changing them, like when you go into properties and Settings and what have you.

I just want to verify that when I shut down the system is keeping the settings. Maybe the battery is going bad, or maybe there is another reason, but I will make sure that its not changing and get back to you.

Thanks for the ideas.

The monitor is old, about 1995, but has not been used so many times as 1995?! I'll look into replacing it.

Thanks for the ideas.

There are no saving of the settings on my monitor, plus it was working fine before I got the new PC.

Any other ideas.

Re: Screen Position won't stay the way I want it

Can't say as I have a lot of ideas, but... if the monitor was working fine before an upgrade, it may be a driver problem. See if you can get the latest drivers for both your monitor and video card. If you can't find xp drivers, use Win 2000 drivers instead of Win 98 drivers, if possible. Not sure that it would help, but....

As far as the notification issue, I haven't figured out how to get notifications out of my junk mail folder on Hotmail. If I set one notification as "this is not junk mail", it doesn't apply to notifications for other posts on other threads. Means I have to venture into the junk mail folder in hotamail (not a pretty place, sometimes!!!)

Are you talking about the physical monitor settings for vertical/horizontal/trapezoidal/brightness/etc. properties?

If so, your monitor may, as mine does, have a set of defaults for each resolution.
You may need to tell the monitor to save your settings as the new default.
