Too many Excels open (Office 2000)

WHen I open an excel attachement, a new Excel application opens up. That prevents Personal.xls macros from being available, as I see it. Is it some Office-level parameter that tells the package to have only one Excel app open, so any xls file opens "within" that?

Apparently, the association of .xls with Excel doesn't use DDE, as it should. Quit Excel, select Start | Run..., and type
    Excel.exe /regserver
This should repair the association. Post back if it doesn't help.

Open Windows Explorer and click on "Folder Options" in the Tools menu. Click on the "File Type" tab. Scroll down to find the .xls extension and select it. Click on the Advanced button. Put a check mark next to "Browse in same window." Click OK to close all dialog boxes.
