File Dialog Box View Default (XP/SP2)

Is there any way to set the views in File|Open and File|Save dialog boxes so that it defaults to Details? I can't get this view to persist.

Thanks!

Some programs will use the settings that are being used by Windows Explorer for the selected folder.

My explorer setting was Details, but I refreshed it just to be sure. Explorer works fine.

After doing that, I did a File|Save when downloading an XL file from a web site and the Save box came up with an alphabetical listing.

Still??

Please define your meaning of "alphabetical listing" vs details?

Sorry... Should have said, "List" instead.

I know that in Word, it should default to whatever way you last close it. That setting should remain between sessions & should be independent of the Windows Explorer setting. In Word, the setting is held in the DATA key, but I'm not sure about the other Office apps. For Word, you could take a look at the last step regarding the DATA key in <post#=197827>post 197827</post#>.
Hope this helps,

Your analogy to Word might be a starting place, but it would be a long hike for me to get there, particularly considering that Word and XL are so different is so many respects. Also, from what you say, the File dialog box view is dynamic and that might be a registry setting you can't change. I wonder....

As others wrote, the File | Open dialog should remember your preferred view, but... it seems to work for some, not for others. The setting is actually stored in the registry, in HKEY_CURRENT_SOFTWAREMicrosoftOffice10.0CommonOpen FindMicrosoft ExcelSettingsOpenView, in the Data value, but unfortunately this is a binary value, so it is dangerous to edit it. There was a recent post in the Excel forum about the File | New dialog. I posted a macro there to get around it, but I can't get it to work consistently for the File | Open dialog

(Edited by DaveA on 13-Jun-03 14:20. )
On my systems running Office XP and one system running Office 2003 the Open file and Save As are sticky. But each Open and Save as are sticky in their own setting. I also checked this in Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Publisher and they are the same way.

These systems are all running Windows XP.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: File Dialog Box View Default (XP/SP2)

Microsoft has published a solution for the Insert Picture dialog that will work for these dialogs, or should I say, probably will work for these dialogs, at least in Word.

See OFFXP: "Insert Picture" Dialog Box Defaults to Thumbnails View

The code is:

Sub InsertPicture()
'
' InsertPicture Macro
' Inserts a picture from a graphics file.
' Sets the View to (D)etail with SendKeys.
' View choices [change last Sendkey Letter].
' D - (D)etails view
' G - Lar(g)e Icon view
' L - (L)ist view
' M - S(m)all Icon view
' R - P®operties View
' V - Pre(v)iew View
' T - (T)humbnails View

SendKeys ("%L{LEFT}D")
Application.Dialogs(wdDialogInsertPicture).Show

End Sub

You would need to substitute the correct dialog name. Also, name the macro for the relevant command Sub
