    AOL gets garbage

I'm using OE5 & win 98. When sending messages to AOL users
they receive random nonsense characters. Users of other ISPs
have no trouble. I've tried sending HTML as well as plain text but it doesn't seem to matter.
    Any suggestions?

    Yeah, find another ISP..

AOL is buggy no matter how you look at it. One of the biggest drawbacks is if you send more than one attachment per message, AOL zips them all up into one file. <img src=/S/puke.gif border=0 alt=puke width=60 height=15> In some cases, this can come out as gibberish on the other side.

It's important to recognize that although AOL does provide doors to the Internet, it is not the Internet per say. AOL is a Content Provider, meaning they provide the content which may be accessible on thier domain. ISP's provide solely, a connection to the internet, and all the sites/resources thereof.

The bottom line, AOL has features which are available with ANY ISP (of which the cost monthly is less). Some people who become fluent in the Internet soon switch from AOL, but I've found in dealing with many different user base's, that AOL users have a harder time acclimating themselves to the Internet.

    My 2 cents <img src=/S/2cents.gif border=0 alt=2cents width=15 height=15>..

are you using mime or uuencoding?

in tools > options > send > mail format > plain text button, set it to mime, none.

Those are the settings I'm using. I'm considering installing 5.5. Maybe that will help.

    i doubt it. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

oh, one other thing to check: use western european (iso) font encoding, definitely do not use user-defined. look in the international button.

Very discouraging. I am using western european font encoding.

Might there be something about the way my recipients aol program is set up that would do this?

    Re: AOL gets garbage

it's AOL, there really isn't much to say. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> 90% of the time there is no problem with plain text but apparently you are in the 10% that has problems.

Attachments, especially multiple attachments, are more of a problem and often get messed up. this includes html and signatures files (images or vcards).

    Re: AOL gets garbage

Well I decided to give MSIE 5.5 a shot. Installed it and OE express 5.5 and lo and behold it seems to be working! Maybe something got corrupted in my previous version.

Anyway thanks for working with me on this. I do appreciate it.
