Removable drive using CD-RW (XP Pro with SP1)

I cannot find out how to use the CD R/W drive on my laptop as a removable hard disc when I pop in a CD-RW. I forget how I used to do it on my desktop machine two years ago, but I suppose it must have been a feature of the driver that came with the CD R/W drive.

Now that Windows XP writes to the CD and needs no third party driver software I was hoping it might also have this 'removable hard disc' feature, but I can't find it in the Help and it certainly doesn't act like one by default.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks in advance.

Hi, John ~

From the XP Pro site: Copy Files and Folders to CDs

If you want to use a CD-RW as removeable media such as a floppy over and over, you canít erase just a single file but rather you must erase the entire CD. To erase the CD-RW, right-click on 'My Computer' and choose 'Explore'. In the left window pane, right-click on the CD drive and choose 'Erase this CD-RW'. A CD erasing wizard will open, answer yes, then wait while your CD is erased.

Bruce,

Many thanks. A good answer, but I wasn't clear enough in my question.

There is a CD ROM driver out there that makes the CD drive look like a removable hard disk to Windows when, and only when, there is a CD-RW in the drive. In other words, Windows doesn't know that it is a CDROM! You can add files, delete files, rename files singly, in groups and however you like. I recall that you did have to format each CD-RW first.

I know that there is such software because I had a desktop system, running Win ME, to which I added a CD-Drive a couple of years ago. The installation disc included such software. However, I cannot for the life of me remember what brand of hardware it was and I was living overseas at the time so I can't even go back to the shop and ask.

Thanks again

Hi, John ~

A CD-ROM can only read files on a CD and will not be able to add, delete or rename files.

If you have a CD-RW drive and use CD-RW media, you can do that to some extent with the native XP software as described above. It treats it not as a 'removeable hard disk' as you mentioned, but as removeable media such as a floppy diskette to add, delete or rename files.

You are right, there is such software, but I thought you wanted to use what came with XP only. If you want to use third party software which is what was included on your installation disc with your desktop system running Win ME, you can use Ahead's 'InCD' that ususally comes with the 'Nero CD Burning ROM 5.5' package or Roxio's 'Direct CD' that comes with the 'Easy CD & DVD Creator 6' package. I believe you may download either one for a free trial period.

Hi, John ~

I came across this and thought you might find it of interest - it's free, too: CDBurnerXP Pro.

Many thanks. After checking CDBurner XP Pro I ended up buying Nero and using the InCD product. It's just what I was looking for.
Thanks again.

Hi, John ~

Glad to hear it! Not happy w/ the XP software and after trying 7 different packages, I prefer Nero and the InCD component. Although the help files can sometimes fall short, techsupport@nero.com always replys promptly to your e-mail queries.

INCD formats a CD to work like a large Floppy and work with Packet Writing.
