Re: shopping for a laptop

I've never met a laptop which runs at -2GHz! I can't even get my head round the concept!

Seriously, though, you have given no more information that someone who asks, "What sort of car should I buy?".

Unless you say what you want to do with it, what features it must have, whether it is to be standalone or part of a network, does it need wireless ... and a whole raft of other such questions, you won't get a useful answer... (That's not to say that this answer should not be regarded as useful - you might be of a philosophical bent, you see).

I do know that at work we reckon that one laptop produces about the same amount of problems as ten to twenty desktop workstations... It all comes from trying to fit a quart into a pint pot. IMHO.

I can't speak for the latest generation of processors and graphics cards, but I've been VERY happy with my Dell Inspiron 8000 1 Ghz (it's almost 2 years old). If they're still building them like they did 2 years ago (and I haven't heard anything to suggest that they aren't), you'll get a very reliable and well-performing machine.

The only downside is that the price is a bit on the high side...

    Just my

Sony has some 2.4 machines. I like my older Sony 800, works like a charme. It is my beta testing machine.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

The next biggest determinant of price probably is the screen size. For $1500-2000 you can get 16" and for $2000-2500 you can get "wide" screens. (These round figures include lots of everything else, from RAM to disk to DVD/CD-RW combo, etc.) Once you have a price range in mind, you can start compromising.

    P.S. We like Dell Inspirons.

Don't forget to check these out. Before you ask they all will run most MS products without a hitch.

Cut a picture out of the different Laptops out there, stick them on the wall, step back, close your eyes, and throw a dart. Tried and true. The Government uses that method all the time. OK so maybe that wasn't a good example.
