    CD Testing

    Hi everyone,

I have many back-up CDs, and I'd like to classify their contents. So I'd use Filegrabber to save the directories to a .txt, then use Excel to import the .txt and handle more easily.
The thing is, several CDs have failed sectors, so some files will not read. In my Excel file I'd like to keep record of the files that can be read and only these, and do away with the rest.
What I need to know is if there is a software that will do the testing for me (ie, 'try to open' each file, then report which files did not open). I could try to copy the whole CD to my HD and then check which files did not copy, but
    1) I do not have enough free HD space
    2) When a file fails to copy, the whole copy process stops, so some files which did not copy may belong to the group of files that can be read from the CD.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you very much

    Hi Diegol

CD Check might do what you want. Apparently it's Free!
While you're at this site, check out the software available, supposedly it's all Free.
(A different link to this site has also been posted elsewhere in the SF&W forum)

    Have a Great day!!!

    Ken,

I found the link to download "CD Check" is dead..... not the link that you provided but the link to the actual file download on the "Son of Spy Freeware Site".

    Re: CD Testing

    Ken, THANK YOU very much!!

In addition to the last link you provided I also found this one for version 2.0.2.273 (322 K). I didn't even use it, but before Pilgrim and you posted back I googled a little and came up with both versions, then installed the latest (the one your link points to).
The program did an excellent job! It did take a while (not only CDChecking but also matching with Vlookup and rearranging the info in Excel), but at last I have a comprehensive list of all the files I store on CDs, taking note of unreadable ones and all.
    BTW, CDCheck is <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>
