    Is it possible they've simplified this, or am I confusing PPAs with COM add-ins?

    Maybe try a "before and after" experiment with the registry after running this suggested code (from the rather cryptic online help) in the Immediate window:
    <hr>This example specifies that the add-in named "MyTools" be loaded automatically each time PowerPoint is started.

    Application.AddIns("mytools").AutoLoad = msoTrue<hr>
    There's a registry monitoring freeware product from SysInternals that you could use. It tends to collect so much data in such a short period of time that you either have to set a filter or slog through a bunch of chatter, but it's sometimes easier than searching for a needle in a haystack.
