    Corrupt something or other

    Hi

I'm using Word97 in an NT environment, and working on a set of documents that all point to the same template (not normal.dot).

Suddenly, some of them (the same ones all the time) cause the following message to appear each time a macro is run "Could not open macro storage".* At least some of the macros reside in normal.dot.* (I think some also reside in the attached template.)

If I rename my normal.dot, the problem persists.* If I also rename the attached template, the problem goes away.

So, I figure it's the attached template (although why only some of the documents are affected is a mystery).* I try progressively recreating the attached template.* I (wrongly as it happens) believe I'm okay with everything recreated except one module (called Auto, containing three (short) auto macros).* I retype those macros. Everything seems okay.* (I'm using Ctrl+F4 as a test, as it causes the AutoClose macro to run and causes the problem.)* Finally, I've made it.* Clean.

I reopen the test document, and press another key combination, which triggers a different macro, and oh no here it is again.* I press Ctrl+F4 again and the problem recurs (even though it didn't last time).

Anyone out there still with me?

I don't actually want to know what's happening.* I just want to get back into operation.* I've tried support.microsoft.com, but nothing useful there.

    # Where do I find detailed documentation on removing corruption by recreating a template?
    # Any other ideas?

    All suggestions gratefully accepted
    Dale

    Dale,

Might this MS KB article (Q162503) offer any help?

Intriguingly, the fifth possible cause discussed is:

    <hr>Check Network Permissions
The Visual Basic Editor creates a folder in the Temp directory to store files. If the Temp directory is being accessed via a network share, the network permissions for this folder must have Create permissions. See your network administrator for information about setting permissions.<hr>

Would also want to have delete permissions unless you like lots of Temp files. Possibly also view and edit. (It's been almost a year since I worked on an NT machine.)

For information on document corruption see:
    Document Corruption (www.addbalance.com/usersguide/document corruption.htm)

    <A target="_blank" HREF=http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q212/2/74.ASP>Q212274 - WD2000: How to Recover Text from Any File</A>

For your macros, open the VBA editor and export all modules and forms (also This Document if it has any code). Import into new template. When copying template, copy everything except the last paragraph mark into a new template. Use Organizer to copy Styles (three times!). Open VBA editor in new template and import all items exported from previous template. Then (after macros have been imported) use Organizer again to copy any toolbars.

If you also have keyboard customizations see Chris Woodman's Keyboard Shortcut Organizer.

See: <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.addbalance.com/usersguide/templates.htm>Template Basics</A> (www.addbalance.com/usersguide/templates.htm) for more on templates (user and workgroup), global templates and Normal.dot.

    Hope this helps.

Hey, what is up with this?
    This information:
    http://www.addbalance.com/usersguide/document corruption.htm
    http://www.addbalance.com/usersguide/document corruption.htm

    Is almost identical to this:
    http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/legal/Document Corruption.asp
    http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/legal/Document Corruption.asp

(add percent sign20 in place of the space to reconstruct links)

    What gives? Aren't you like breaking <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.microsoft.com/info/cpyright.htm>Microsoft's Terms of Use</A>?

Excerpt from MS Terms of Use:

I see they say you can distribute it freely, but to me that means print it, copy it, and pass it out, not try to sell THEIR material for $19.95!!

    Something doesn

    Re: Corrupt something or other

Well, I do not give legal advice in public, but I am inclined to read Microsoft generously in this case. The page at issue says:

"There are NO copyright restrictions on your use of this document. You may distribute it freely, either in parts or in whole."

There is a similar message on the <A target="_blank" HREF=http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/legal/>legal guide home page</A>:

"The content in this guide is freely distributable. You are not restricted in anyway from copying and distributing all or part of the guide."

It is true that copyright restrictions and license restrictions are not the same thing, and this language is plainly inconsistent with the Terms of Use. The usual rule of thumb is that the specific trumps the general, and on that basis, I think we really are free to duplicate and even resell the legal guide. (Whether that is ethical is a completely different question!)

    Re: Corrupt something or other

I certainly don't want this turning into a big discussion, (this is a Word group <g>)

But personally I think the specific statement trumps this paragraph in the Terms of Agreement:

<<Educational institutions (specifically K-12, universities and state community colleges) may download and reproduce the Documents for distribution in the classroom. Distribution outside the classroom requires express written permission. Use for any other purpose is expressly prohibited by law, and may result in severe civil and criminal penalties. Violators will be prosecuted to the maximum extent possible.>>

Microsoft is giving express written permission to distribute the Documents for use outside the classroom.

If it came down to it, my bet would be with MS to win this lawsuit. LOL

    Re: Corrupt something or other

I raised this about a month ago, and have finally worked out the problem.* You're not going to believe this one!

To recap, some of my documents were giving a "Could not open macro storage" message every time a macro tried to run.* (Others using the same templates didn't.)

The answer:* The offending documents had square brackets in the filename!* For example, one document was called "Reports [new version]".

I removed the square brackets from the filename and, voila, the problem goes away.

    Thanks everyone for their help

But my question to you is... how did you track that one down?

Or, more to the point, why didn't I see it earlier.

In my defence, all the affected documents had come from the same source, and all the unaffected ones, a different source.

But, finally, I realised that the affected documents had another common denominator. Only slightly embarrassed. <img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15>

Thank you, from the bottom of my file list.

How <font color=red>did</font color=red> you find this out?
