    Type Formula (XL 97; SR2)

    Cell A4 contains the formula A2 + A3. When using TYPE on a cell containing a formula the value returned should be 8 not 1.

    Can someone test this and let me know your result.

    Thanks,
    John

    This is a known discrepancy: see XL: TYPE() Function Doesn't Return Value 8 for Formula <img src=/S/bummer.gif border=0 alt=bummer width=15 height=15>

    As far as I know the cell type returned by the function is the VALUE of the cell which is NUMBER. If the formula returned a text it would give 2, if it returned TRUE/FALSE, 4 etc. I am NOT sure how you would have a cell VALUE be equal to a formula.

    Re: Type Formula (XL 97; SR2)

    I no longer have access to XL97, but from memory the TYPE function was dodgy.

    In XL2000 Help, TYPE for a formula-containing cell is not listed:

    If value is TYPE returns
    Number 1
    Text 2
    Logical value 4
    Error value 16
    Array 64

    The online help for Excel 2002 doesn't mention a return value of 8 either, but the function wizard does, both in the "Insert Function" dialog and in the "Function Arguments" dialog...

    In XL2000 the function Wizard doesn't mention a return value of 8 either.

    The plot thickens - when I wrote that the function wizards mentions 8 as return value for formulas, I was using the Dutch language version of Excel 2002 SP-2; I just checked the English language version and it doesn't mention 8 as return value. <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29>
