    Already open messages (Excel 2000)

I had a crash and now I am barraged with " .xls is already open. Opening it...etc." even after I rebooted the computer. Why does excel continue to think these files are open? I can only open read-onlys and that is a big problem. Thanks.

Try clearing out your Temp folder - Excel stores a temporary file for each open workbook; normally this is removed when you close the workbook, but when you crash, these files are left behind.

In addition to Hans' suggestion, pres control-alt-del and see if any Excel tasks are still around. End them.
