Setting default page size in Excel (2000 SR-1)

    Hi,

Our IT people worked on a few computers and now those computers have a problem. When an existing Excel spreadsheet is opened and printed, it prints on 11x17 paper, which is the default paper size. While this can be changed to letter size, the next time that (or any pre-existing spreadsheet) is opened, Excel reverts to this new, useless default paper size.

11x17 is listed first in the choices of paper, while on the rest of the PC's the first in the list is standard letter size. Basically, on these "upgraded" computers, the list of paper sizes is very different from the standard list on the rest of the computers. Also, new Excel documents will default to letter size; it's only the existing spreadsheets that insist on being 11x17 everytime they're opened. Unfortunately, there are hundreds of these existing spreadsheets.

Is there any way to make Excel open all these documents with letter size as the default paper size, and make that setting stick? And by the way, these PC's uses the same printers as everyone else in the office.

    Thanks!

Well you could check in other apps and see if the same problem exists. But I'm betting the problem isn't Excel, but the configuration of the printer itself.
Go to the Control Panel and open up the printer. Make sure the settings there are what you want. Reopen Excel and check.

    Hi Catharine,

Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately it didn't work. Even after rebooting, the problem persists. New Excel spreadsheets default to letter size paper, but any pre-existing Excel spreadsheets insist on defaulting to 11x17 paper. The PC is keeping the proper settings that I entered for the printer via the Control Panel, but they don't affect these stubborn old spreadsheets.

If you change the old workbook to the correct size and save it, does the change stick?

What I am thinking is that maybe the IT folks installed some new printer dirvers and that is causing the problem.
