File Takes 30 Minutes to Open (2000 Service Pack 3)

Hello - My first Post here on The Lounge.

I've got an Excel file that's 3.87 MB. I've had lots of trouble opening the file lately, but others in my department can open no problem. Generally, it's taking me about 30 minutes to open the file. My colleagues can open in less than 2 minutes. The file has tons of VBA code and controls (checkboxes, etc.). I've searched a number of websites and have tried many solutions offered for problems similar to mine, but to no avail. I've tried to delete my temp files, my .xlb file, re-registered Excel, uninstalled and reinstalled, and updated my service packs for both Windows and Office. Anybody have any additional suggestions?

    Thanks in advance.

    Where is the file stored?

It's a template file originally stored in my template directory on my C drive. However, I've also had it saved as a workbook (.xls) file on my network drive and my desktop with the same sluggish opening.

Yes Ma'am. Only this file. Other files, though not nearly as big as this one, work just fine. Again, my next door office neighbor can open the problem file without incident.

Don't lose patience with me yet, just trying to sort out the obvious.
Have you gotten a "fresh" copy of the offending file from one of your coworkers and had the same problem?

Yes, I have. And, no, I'm not losing patience. I just really appreciate your help.

No error message, just long, long load time. Again, it's about 30 minutes. CPU useage when I do CTRL/ALT/DEL shows 99%.

Re: File Takes 30 Minutes to Open (2000 Service Pack 3)

I'm wondering if the file (which you say has a ton of VBA code) is looking for a VBA reference which is not loaded on your system.
I thought a file wouldn't load at all if the reference wasn't there. [hmmm]
Can you go to a coworkers desk - who has a functioning version of the file and see what references are loaded on their system?
In case you haven't done this before:
    In Excel
Press Alt + F11 to open the VBA Editor
Once in the Editor, go to Tools, References
Search through the list and see what they've got and you haven't.

Let me know what comes up. (and if that isn't the answer, we'll have to wait for another lounger to come up with something).

    Cheers

Re: File Takes 30 Minutes to Open (2000 Service Pack 3)

You may be on to something. I checked my co-worker's machine and he has the following checked:

    Visual Basic for Applications
    MS Excel 9.0 Object Library
    Ole Automation
    MS Forms 2.0 Object Library
    MS Office 9.0 Object Library

I opened Excel on my machine. In the VB Editor, I followed the menu path, Tools/Reference and noted that I had the same things checked as he did, except for the 2.0 Object Library. Could that be the problem? If so, how do I add it?

    Thanks again for your assistance.

Are you using the same anti-virus software as the others, and is it configured identically. Try disabeling the AV software on your system and open the file and see what happens.

Back to your coworkers computer, select the 2.0 Object library item, find its location (see picture).
On your computer, use the browse button to find same.

Also check out Legare's suggestion (his batting average is higher than mine <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>).

Re: File Takes 30 Minutes to Open (2000 Service Pack 3)

I know I'm going to sound ignorant, so forgive me. But, I believe our virus software runs when we log onto the network. I've checked my system tray and task manager and don't show any virus software running. So, I'm not sure that's the culprit.

    Thanks

OK, I've found the file on my computer, but what do I do with it?
