New Programs seem to Incorrectly Setfiles Read Onl (Windows XP SP1)

Everytime I install a new program as an Administrator the files often seem to install as read only and I have to reset the files to full permissions manually, even some of the subdirecories that should also be set full change not read only have to set the individual subdirectories, despite okaying reset subdirectories as well.
Is this only me or is this a problem with windows xp

What folder(s) are you installing to?
(You are referring to the attributes of the files and not the folders, aren't you?)

Actually I was referring to folders, files, directories, When you install any new program say scansoft for example it creates a folder under crogram filesscansoft. and even though signed on as a administrator still have files / folders set as read only inappropriately, and sometimes not full security permissions either.

Actually yes it did prove harmful.
My medical package did not update the accumulators correctly since files were not overwritten and data became corrupted unitl I reset all the attributes and permissions.
Paperport would not update the thumbnail views on the desktop, If i updated manually then when I reloaded the program they were back to icons, until i reset the attributes.

Re: New Programs seem to Incorrectly Setfiles Read Onl (Windows XP SP1)

    Jerome--

I saw this and searched around, but my first question is--are you kept from doing anything in or with these programs? The reason I ask is that when I checked a number of my installed programs, about half are marked "read only" with the box shaded there, and the other half aren't marked at all. Omni Page Pro has no marks, but Photoshop Elements is marked Read-Only. I can uninstall or install Elements at will--and I'm not kept from doing anything I can tell. Is it keeping you from setting security permissions? This also seems analagous to when GPO are used to set authorization and access control permissions in larger companies or enterprises.

I didn't bother to search out explicit or inherited or special permissions on the Securities Properties Dialogue Box or Permission Entries box, because there doesn't seem to be anything preventing me from doing anything with any of my programs, no matter whether Read Only is marked or not.

I'm pitching these links to you--maybe they can help when someone works with you to get your permissions situated the way you want.

    See:

    1) 326549: You Cannot View or Change the Read-Only or System Attribute of Folders

Boy,would I like to help and after reading through Chapter 16 "Authorization and Access Control" in the Resource Kit on ACL's, file permissions overriding folder permissions, and everything in Ed Bott's book pertaining to permissions and attributes, I know I won't be able to. Now I need a couple aspirin.

    But take a look at:

Security Explorer--it could be the magic bullet you need to sort out permissions. The difficulty for me would be to learn what the appropriate permission settings would be first.

    Also:

Setting NTFS Permissions for Directories or Files
    Access Control
    File Attribute Manager

Thanks, but if you have a headache, I'll have a migraine!!
I think windows 2000 is easier to use than xp because of all this.
I will just check that all files are writeable accessable of every program i will install.
    Thanks

Do you have to repeatedly reset the attributes or are they stable where you want them now?

Jerome, You don't usually need to worry about read-only on a folder. see You Cannot View or Change the Read-Only or System Attribute of Folders. Are you sure that the user is a membor of the administrators group? Are you sure that the permissions for the user have not been changed? Are the programs you are installing XP compatible?

Is the user a member of any other groups? XP (&all NT based OSes) security uses the most restrictive settings that a user is a part of to determine effective permissions. Can you install in safe mode successfully?

I don't think I am apart of any group. When I installed xp just set myself up as a user with administrator priveleges.
I am not certain installing in safte mode is ideal

Jerome, Is this XP Pro or Home? A new installation of the OS? Fresh install or upgrade?
