Surface Scan doesn't finish upon startup

When a users's windows 98 machine boots, it immediately performs a surface scan. It gets to 99% complete and then hangs. The computer doesn't continue at all. The user has tried to boot in to safe mode, but she can't get past the surface scan. What could cause that?

Re: Surface Scan doesn't finish upon startup

First guess would be a corrupted HDD, try booting to DOS (Command prompt) and run the scandisk from there. Sorry, I'm well away from any Win98 PC at the moment and don't recall the specific commands. I do know that the Windows startup and scandisk can trip each other up.

If all else fails, try Notron Utilities if you have a copy.

    Hope this helps.
