Mouse problem?

I have noticed an occasional problem with my mouse cursor. This does NOT happen all of the time, but often enough to be annoying.
When I hover the cursor over and item, instead of a steady explaination box (for want of a better term, I can't think of the proper name), I get a flashing text box. Sometimes, if I let it hover for a while, it will go steady, others not.
I have reloaded and checked for current mouse drivers. I have tried to adjust the mouse refresh rate, up and down, using a utility and even tried subbing the mouse in desparation. All to no avail. It does to be more prevalent on the Webshots site, (which I use) but as mentioned it will occur in other locations, though not as often.

Any ideas will be appreciated. This is annoying but no big deal.

Re: Mouse problem?

SMBP,
The mouse is a HP USB, optical. The screen shot shown is a "good" shot example. When it's not working, the text box flashes on & off. In this shot the line above was flashing, but I couldn't get a shot of it because it WAS flashing.

Bob, Seems like either a video card/driver problem or something is using lots of the CPU. What OS? Have you run spyware detection? Is the mouse corded or cordless?

Re: Mouse problem?

Hi Joe,
I'm running WinXP Home SP1 & latest hotfixes. Haven't added anything new since this started. Have run both Spybot & AdAware with latest definitions, all OK. The mouse is a corded type optical wheel mouse.
I just checked the CPU useage, (the cursor is still flashing now) at only 1 to 2 %.
Don't know about the video card, all other graphic functions appear Ok. Running resolution 1024x768, with 32 bit color. ( I tried 16 bit, no change)
Strange?

Hi Bob, Have you got the latest drivers for the mouse & video card? Is the mouse PS2 or USB?

Joe,
Yes, as mentioned above, I do have the latest drivers for mouse and video. The mouse is USB.

Re: Mouse problem?

Any chance this might have something to do with your unconventional pointer (theme)? You might try and go back to one of the standard ones and see if it helps. Shot in the dark, I know, but weirder things have happened.....

Re: Mouse problem?

Kip,
I had thought of that possibility. I don't honestly remember if I had the problem before that or not, but I think I did, since I've used that scheme for some time now. It will be worth a try though, easy to make the change back, so I'll see what happens and report back.

Re: Mouse problem?

Hi Kip,
Well, I went back to the default cursor scheme and lo and behold, I STILL get that flashing text box when hovering on some , not all items?

Bob, Have you checked HP's support site? Wonder if it could be the sampling rate? Who's the OEM for the mouse? Is this on a USB hub?

Have you tried sfc /scannow or doing a repair with your Win CD?

Re: Mouse problem?

Hi Joe,

To make the cheese more binding, as I was mousing around, the HP mouse died. Right in my hand, the poor thing expired. Froze up and refused to do anything more, despite my attempts at CPR, it just went where all good mice go?

So, I ran out to the local Staples and picked up another replacement mouse and installed it. Got my mouse back OK and LO and Behold.........I STILL have the flashing problem hovering over some things !!

I now have a Logitech USB Optical wheelmouse, with all the latest drivers, etc, etc. Doing the same thing that the old one did. I suspect the OEM for the old one was also Logitech but not sure.

You mentioned sampling rate? Not sure how you would adjust, check ir change that????

Hi Cowboy,
Yep, tried those things among the many other attempts at repair. NG

Re: Mouse problem?

Hi Bob, Too bad it bit the big one. I'm not sure about the sampling rate. If it is adjustable it would be a setting in the driver (maybe). You sure it is on a good reflective surface? Is it in a USB hub? Or, is it plugged into a USB port on the PC?
