    Automatic save (Word XP)

    Good afternoon,

I (or better said, my collegue) have a problem with the automatic save function in Word. When this function is active the documents are automatically saved... so far so good.... BUT: when it starts saving the document changes into a '~####WRC.tmp' instead of the first name it has been given.... Can anyone tell me why this is happening? I checked settings like standard paths etc... but I don't see anything strange...

    Many thanks in advance!

    Re: Automatic save (Word XP)

    Hi Daphne:
Word uses many types of temp files. While I haven't checked Word 2002 specifically, previous versions are similar in this regard. When you use autosave, Word creates *.asd files. Those are only used if Word crashes without saving. That's their function. The ~wrcxxxx.doc is a temp file that is used as a copy of another document.

Among other uses, Word stores your file & edits in a temp file (usually ~dftxxxx.tmp). When you save the file, Word deletes the original file & renames the temp file to your original. This process repeats as you edit. For more information on how temp files are used, you can see this article, although I'm sure that a similar one exists for Word 2002.
    Cheers,

Word has no Automatic save! (Word XP)

Word does not auto-save documents. It optionally saves "auto-recover" information. This information is used only to recover from crashes that meet specific criteria: you left your document unsaved for the number of minutes set in the box on the Tools>Options...>Save tab, and you did not close the document or save it normally before the crash.

You could, if you wanted, add some program code that would auto-save your document "in-place" at intervals of your choosing, but that would be a bit of a project to do from scratch, so if no one volunteers some ready-made code, you might prefer to stick with manual (Ctrl+S) and auto-recovery saves.

Re: Word has no Automatic save! (Word XP)

    Goodmorning,

    Thanks for your speedy answer!

The problem is not that I don't know where my autosave documents are saved after a crash, but Word doesn't crash! It just saves the documents with this tempname...
When I uncheck the box Autosave there's nothing wrong, but when I check this box, it starts saving the document with this wrong name?
No other employee has this problem, and they have the same images... so it is not a crahs problem, but a strange saving problem.

(could it be that this particular pc disconnects from our network now and then, for instance because of a faulty wire or something like this? So that it looks like Word crashes?)

    Nevertheless many thanks!

    Daphne

    Hi Daphne:
I don't have Word 2002, so things may have changed. However, under Tools/Options/Save tab, what are you checking off? It sounds like others are using the "Always create backup copy", which saves the file "backup of filename.wbk".

Re: Word has no Automatic save! (Word XP)

The way it seems to work for me is that .tmp files are added to the document folder every time I save a document with new changes. These .tmp files seem to represent the previously saved version of the document. Once I close the document (assuming Word doesn't crash) they are deleted leaving only the .DOC file.

If your colleague watches the file names and time stamps carefully, can he confirm this pattern? (It might help to sort by Modified Time, latest at the bottom, so that the temp files are grouped together as they accumulate.)
