Comments Horrible in Word XP (Word XP / original)

Forgive me if this is a rerun, but I was just comparing the way Word 2K displays comments with the way Word XP displays them. Because they've been cobbled onto track changes, it doesn't seem possible to display them the way one could in Word 97 and 2K. Is this so?

Comments were highly visible, could be used to embed information about, say, what printer tray to use. Comments in Word XP are SO not visible (an I-bar at worst, brackets surrounding selected text at best).

Has anyone discovered a way to display the good old way? I have VBA code that applies a comment to a paragraph -- it could also highlight the text, but that would print.

    Thanks,
    Kim

    Display the Reviewing toolbar.
    Click the Show dropdown list
Make sure that Comments is checked.
If you still don't see comments, click the Show dropdown list again.
    Select Options...
Make sure that the "Use balloons" option is checked.
Comments are then displayed as balloons in the page margin. Not ideal, but <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

    Well,

Done all that. We used comments as an easy way to pass along important information about a document -- they were meant to be read only and the highlighting that didn't print was a visible cue that some special information existed. The brackets of the current feature are barely visible, even though the hovering works the same.

Showing the ballons doesn't work because they print and would need to be acted upon before printing -- either delete altogether, which defeats the purpose of the informational comment in the first place, or toggle the balloon off, print, toggle back on. This requires 'way 'way too much thinking and again defeats the purpose of an easy-to-use feature. MSoft just made it much harder, is all.

    Oh well -- <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15> , indeed.

    Thanks very much,
    Kim

It's a pity, really; several of the things meant by Microsoft as enhancements in Word 2002 make using the program more difficult. I don't like the task pane for new documents and the task pane for mail merge; comments and track changes are other examples.

I don't see a way to change this; it isn't a "style" that can be altered easily.

You can highlight the comments with printing highlights using code like:

    activedocument.Comments(1).Scope.HighlightColorInd ex = wdYellow

But removing the highlights won't be much fun. I also couldn't find any way to insert author initials into the selected area. Maybe a macro...

    Hi J,

Oh, I don't really care about the initials. It's the highlighting that doesn't print that I want! Ironically enough, you can change the style of the Comment Text that appears in the Reviewing Pane. What good that does I'm not sure, except that you can enlarge the text if you have a very high resolution monitor.

Thanks for applying your brain power to this.

It occurs to me that the animated "Text Effects" available from Format>Font... do not print. However, they are a bit annoying. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

    But what a wonderful idea!! <img src=/S/clapping.gif border=0 alt=clapping width=19 height=23>

It certainly gets your attention, and it's a very stable feature in Word... I can easily add that to the code that inserts the comment in the first place.

I think I'll do a little testing and see what response I get from the more sensitive types.

    Thanks!
