    Keystronke / mouse recording (2000)

Is there anything in the windows OS which can record keystrokes and or mouse movements? This would be for documenting steps taken during complicated form filling or query constructions. Thanks.

I think you need some add-on software. While Windows obviously pays attention to keystrokes and mouse movements, so that they can be dispatched to the correct applications, intercepting those messages will take some doing. The software sold to "spy" on people using the computer should tackle it easily.

Windows 3.11 came with 'Recorder' for doing that. If you've still got a copy lying around, it may well run under Win2K. Recorder allowed the keystrokes to be played back too. Essentially it worked a bit like the macro recorder does in Word etc.

What might be the filename of that? Perhaps I can snoop around 95 or somewhere else to find it. Thanks.

In Win 3.1/3.11 it was named "Recorder.exe". Don't know if it was carried over to later versions, though.

Methinks it was just plain old "recorder.exe". I also seem to remember one that came either with Lotus' Organizer, or SmartSuite, called "ScreenCam" or similar. You could also try a trawl through the Software forum because this sounds like something that could well have been covered there.

Open your favorite search engine (as Google) and search for "Keystroke Recorder" - it's a lot of them!
