Footer defaults to a different language (Word 2000, XP)

In our office we have a fair old mix of software on the PCs on our intranet. One of my colleagues is running Office 2000 Word and the rest of us (3 people) are running Word XP.

My colleague's word version (2000) is set for dual language - Arabic and English. The others all work in English exclusively .

The dual language version was used to produce a large document split into several individual sections and each one stored as a separate .doc file.

My colleague's document is entirely in English but when he came to do the headers and footers for each section things got a bit crazy.
The headers are in English and everything is OK. The footers default to Arabic exclusively and cannot be changed.

If he tries to insert page numbers (from the insert menu) in English they appear as Arabic numerals and cannot be switched to English.
The only way he can get English numerals is to insert a page field directly into the footer. This brings other problems with it.
If we copy and paste the documents between the various PCs we get the same phenomenon occuring. Only difference is that the Arabic numerals have changed to English. The footer box changes to right _left language orientation and the language bar now reads "Arabic".

If you open the Auto Text box in the footer, all the entries are in Arabic. In the header they are all in English.

Another interesting result is that the document properties dialogue box tabs now appear in Arabic with the General Tab in English.

Can anyone explain what is happening and if possible point us towards a solution?

Is it possible to edit the Footer style to change the language to English?

Re: Footer defaults to a different language (Word 2000, XP)

I have experimented with one of the copies of this file and I discovered that if you start typing in the footer box or change the style it immediately reverts to English.

I am enclosing a screen shot just to clarify my original and necessarily verbose post.

We have been unable to print this particular section. All attempts at printing, cutting pasting, creating a printer file, etc have caused the various computers to hang.

I assume that the dropdown list encircled in the screenshot is the language dropdown. Your screenshot doesn't display the style dropdown list. Which style is applied to the footer, and can you edit this style?
