Wild, Wild West (bullets & tracking) (Word 2K)

I have a document for which I cannot get rid of the tracked changes that apply to a bulleted <img src=/S/wartgun.gif border=0 alt=wartgun width=73 height=24> list. I can repeatedly "Accept All" and all changes are accepted (text goes to normal, black colored), but the next time I go to turn tracking on again, any changes made to a list show up again as tracked changes (blue, underlined).

I've tried saving as RTF and then re-saving as Word 2000, but that doesn't get rid of the problem.

I suspect it's either a Word bug, or it was possibly created in a former version of Word, and that's what's causing the trouble.... I just don't know how to get rid of it.

    Thanks for any help!!

    Hi Angela,

Would it be possible to attach a copy of the document with just the troublesome part, and with confidential/sensitive text replaced by dummy text? That would enable Loungers to have a go at it.

Well, that's not supposed to happen! Is it possible that the list contains field codes? If you press Alt+F9, are there any REF or other fields that might be pulling text from elsewhere in the document? Editing over fields generally isn't very reliable, and opening the document could refresh the fields and change them "back" to what they were before. Just a wild guess.

Here's the document! Sorry for the delay - I was actually helping someone else with the document and it took a while to get it from her!

You won't notice anything abnormal until you try to turn on Track Changes, and check out the numbered lists. I can't Accept them - or rather, I can, but they still show up.

    Have fun!

I've tried the accept changes route and have also copied and pasted into a new document, without getting rid of the changes. But I was able to permanently eliminate the tracked changes by doing the following:

    1. With Track Changes enabled, remove all the bullets.
    2. Accept all the changes.
    3. Disable Track Changes.
    4. Reinsert your bullets.

Now, when you enable Track Changes, the old tracked changes are gone.

Don't know what is causing Word not to accept the changes and get rid of the tracking, so I hope this helps and will look back to see if someone can tell you why it happens.

I get the same result as Spence. Don't know what caused it though. Numbering in Word is flakey enough without track changes added to it. It's best to tie numbering to styles, rather than just apply numbering to the normal style.

I did notice something, however. The numbering doesn't seem to be from the same List Template, even though it appears to be when looking in the Format/Bullets & Numbering box (same tab & same location). With track changes on, if I select the first numbered paragraph & press Ctrl+Shift+C (to copy formatting) & then select the next two paragraphs & press Ctrl+Shift+V (to copy the formatting), I can then accept the changes.
    Cheers,

    Spence,

Just a guess as to why this worked (and to confirm Angela's question) - this was a bug in Word 97 which went away in Word 2000. However if you had a document or template which was created in Word 97, the problem would still appear if the document was opened in Word 2000. It only affected some numbering outlines and not others; never did figure out why - there was one particular template I created at my former job, where there was absolutely nothing we could do to get rid of this effect. Fortunately the users of this template always used CompareRite/DeltaView rather than tracked changes, so we dodged that bullet!

So my guess as to why this worked is that in effect you turned off the 'Word 97 bullets' and replaced them with 'Word 2000 bullets' - shouldn't make any difference, but.....

    Gary
