    Change graphics defaults (2000 Standard SR-3)

    How can I change the default settings for graphics that I insert into a document? For example, I'd like the size to be 4" instead of 8" high, and I'd like to prevent the graphic from moving with text. I know how to make these changes for each graphic, but I'm working with hundreds of them in one project, and it sure would be nice to save some mouse clicks.

    I don't know if it is possible to set the defaults, but you might create a macro to set these properties for the selected graphic, or for all graphics in a document. For example the following incomplete example that assumes that you have floating shapes (you'll have to fine-tune it to make it do what you want):

    Sub CorrectShapes()
    Dim shp As Shape
    For Each shp In ActiveDocument.Shapes
    With shp
    .LockAspectRatio = msoTrue
    .Height = InchesToPoints(4)
    .RelativeHorizontalPosition = wdRelativeHorizontalPositionMargin
    .RelativeVerticalPosition = wdRelativeVerticalPositionMargin
    End With
    Next shp
    Set shp = Nothing
    End Sub

    When you find yourself doing these things repetitively, you can try using the macro recorder to capture the critical commands. Unfortunately, any time you use a multi-tabbed dialog, the recorder tends to capture lots of irrelevant settings, so you need to trim those out in the editor. Fun project!

    Oh dear, I'm not a macro-person. Somewhere, I know I read about changing the defaults for things like tables and graphics so that you don't need to fuss with each one -- and it didn't require a macro. I'll search my library and let you know if I come up with a solution. Or, if someone out there knows, please chime in.

    One trick I worked out to set a consistent height for pictures is to open another (new) document and set the top and bottom margins to leave the desired gap - inserted images do not appear to want to allow themselves to be bigger than the page.
    This works with multiple images - Insert > Picture > File and select as many as you want to work with at a time - they will all be capped to the same height. It is then simply a matter of cutting and pasting as and when you need them to your 'working' document.
