I have a system running Win 98SE and IE5.50 SP1. From email or a website, links won't resolve to the URL. IE starts and outer frame displays with the address box, but the URL is not plugged into the address box and it won't go to the new site. Thought it might help to update the software so went to Start | Windows Update and it got through the step of scanning to see what updates I needed. When I clicked to download and install, I got the EULA window and accepted, then the update box displayed with the bar graphs, but nothing downloaded. When I clicked Cancel I got error message "IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in module RPCRT4.DLL"
I was able to go to Microsoft.com and take another route to the IE update and now have updated to IE 6.0 and when I try to do the Windows Update now it gets to the same place and still doesn't download anything. When I click on "Cancel" I get the "MSIE has encountered an error and needs to shut down..." and the details still reference the same rpcrt4.dll module. I installed a new copy of rpcrt4.dll from another computer and that didn't help.
Need suggestions on both areas: 1) why links won't resolve and 2) why MS updates won't download.
TIA
