    Embedding TT Fonts (2002 (XP))

Hello, Any thoughts as to why the Embed TrueType fonts check box in the Tools | Options | Save tab doesn't embed the font.

I downloaded a TT fonts from http://www.graffitifonts.com and installed it in the C:windowsfont directory, created a .doc file and checked the embed TT font option, and saved the file. When opened in MS Word on another computer that didn't have the font the text did not display in that font. It was listed in the formatting toolbar but nothing else. MS Word did show the font as being a TT font as did the font folder. I tried checking and unchecking the sub check boxes under the embed command and still nothing. I assume based on MS Word help that this is the correct option for displaying fonts on computers that don't have them installed.

    Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

    Steve

    Hi Steve,

Not all fonts are "embeddable". It depends on the embedding permissions, which are set in the font.
There are quite a few nuances:
"Installable embedding allowed", "Editable embedding allowed" , "Print and Preview embedding", "Restricted license embedding".

Unfortunately, Word itself can't tell you the permissions that the font foundry which created the font has given.

Perhaps new versions of Windows allow you to see the permissions: Right-click on a font in the fonts folder, then look up "Properties, Embedding-tab".
If that doesn't work, you need to install a tool such as the "Font properties extension" from MS Typography.
