Opening xls from Outlook (2002)

Have a user on our network using WinXP-Pro and Office 2002. He receives an email with Excel file attachment. Very intermittently it will fail to open. He was actually able to show the failure to me once!

    Stats
He has a 2Ghz XP-SP1, Office 2002 with 512MB. He has Outlook, Excel, IE6 and maybe one other AP running (plus Mcafee).

Here is the situation. In Outlook he clicks on the attachment. He gets the next window with choice option "Open" or "Save". He clicks Open and OK. That window closes and nothing else happens. The Excel file does not open and he is back to the email. Sometimes he can repeat this same scenario several times. The time he demo'd the failure to me it failed once, but the second time it opened OK.

He has noted that most the time out of frustration after the 1st failure, he just shuts down Excel and then the Inbox file attachment will open normally.

If it were more solid I'd be more confident in trouble shooting it. but it is quit intermittent. Any thoughts?

Re: Opening xls from Outlook (2002)

    Mike,

We use Groupwise. I have always told people to never open an attached workbook from inside Groupwise. Too many problems.
I tell them to always save the attachment to disk, then open from there using Excel. Maybe you are supposed to be able to open form within the mail programs, but I have encountered too many problems doing that.

    Just my 2 cents worth.

See <!post=this,267736>this<!/post> post re the Temporary Internet Files (TIF) Setting. If the problem happens on larger files, it -could- be the answer. The TIF setting referred to is found in IE under Tools, Internet Options, Settings, Amount of Disk Space to Use. The folder location depends on the OS and Office version, in my 2000/2000 corporate installation it is:

Cocuments and Settings<username>Local SettingsTemporary Internet FilesOLK7

and is therefore subject to the TIF limit

Re: Opening xls from Outlook (2002)

If you have Outlook 2000 SR1 or later (and can get at the Registry), there is an invaluable hack explained by Microsoft at MSKB 249793 for OL 2000 and at MSKB 296115 for OL 2002.

This diverts all your opened Outlook attachments into their own folder.

Not only does it get around the TIF limit,
but also it makes searching for the file that you didn't think you needed to save the other day/week that much simpler.[/list]N.B. Beware the requirement for a trailing backslash in the OL 2000 hack (only).
