    Printing nonprinting characters (Word 2002)

Is there any way to print the nonprinting characters, such as paragraph marks, tabs, soft returns, etc.?

Interesting request. I think you could do it with a macro that would add an actual unicode (or ascii) char for each mark (and take them out after printing), but I doubt there's a built in way to do it.

I think you'll either need to get a special font that has those characters or find the ASCII code for each. Then you can do a Find/Replace to add them to your document.

    e.g.
    Find: ^13
    Replace: ^0182^&

This finds paragraph marks & replaces them with the paragraph symbol & itself. However, I don't know if you can do this with tabs.
    Cheers,

Check out the attachments in this thread: Printing format markers (Word 2000). I haven't tested them myself, but it sounds as though it covers at least some of the standard markers.

I've had cause to do this before, in instructional docs etc. The easiest way I've found is to turn on paragraph marks etc. and take a screenshot of the area of interest. Crop etc. as necessary and paste it into the document in the appropriate place. If this means a visible (printed) duplication of the material, then make the actual text you grabbed hidden in the document. This means it's still possible to carry out normal editing by unhiding the text then repeating and replacing the snapshot. There's a tiny freeware tool called EyeDropper that's ideal for such precise screen grabs (27KB). Pity Word doesn't support a camera tool like Excel has.
