Win 2K problem? (Can't manipultate files)

I am not sure where to post this problem. I decided to post it here due to the fact that it didn't seem to be limited to one type of software.

I have a user who got the following two errors message the other day:

Could not save as "...tube3.pad" because the file is already in use or was left open.

Cannot delete tube3: There has been a sharing violation. The source or destination file may be in use.

When I questioned her about it she told me that it would happen with any file at any time. Most of the time she isn't even working in a particular program. For example, a few weeks ago, she downloaded some pictures onto her desktop and then tried to delete them and it wouldn't let her. Sometimes, she will be cleaning out items from network folders and certain files, even ones she didn't create, will lock up. There was a file that someone had placed in a folder and she tried to rename it (in a folder that is open and available to "everyone"). It wouldn't let her rename the file. She saved a copy under a different name, but still couldn't delete the original and then it wouldn't let her change the copy either. She says it seems very random.

Any thoughts and/or ideas as to what may be causing the issue. So far I am drawing a blank on were to even start looking for a possible solution.

Thanks!

Are you using Norton Recycle Bin? If so read this Cannot delete file X: There has been a sharing violation. The source or destination file may be in use

Here is a little free program that could help FreeFile

This seems to work for some with that problem.

Try this: do control-ALT-DELETE to bring up the "Windows Security" box. Click on "Task Manager." After it comes up, chose the "Processes" tab and then click on the task "Explorer.exe" Then click on the button "End Process." Explorer will close but the task manager will stay open. Then chose from the FILE menu, "New Task (Run)..." and type "Explorer.exe" and run it. Explorer will now open back up. Now try deleting or renaming the folder.

Thanks for your post CBD. She isn't running any kind of Norton software on her machine so I will have to rule that out. I will have her try the ending and starting of Explorer.exe the way your recomended. Any ideas on why or how that works?

I know that her problems with her files are random. Today she was able to remove the file that she wasn't able to yesterday.

Was that after a re-boot?

Yes that was after a reboot, but it isn't always the case. She said that sometimes she can go a whole week unable to change a particular file or image and then out of the blue she can.

Run a full ChkDsk on all drives - probably easier to set up by right_clicking each drive in My Computer > Properties > Tools > Error checking.
If they are locked for whatever reason, you may find ChkDsk needs to run at boot time.

I ran the check disk and it came back with no errors. I found out some new information however. We built this user a new box (I say new, but I mean rebuilt an different box for her). I thought the problem was new, but she said that she had this problem even on her old box.

... the thot plickens.

Are the locked files on a local disk or do you have a network of some sort?

Some general troublespots listed here you could check:

MSKB 320081 - You Cannot Delete a File or a Folder.

Thanks CBD!! Your solution (and none of the others) worked for me!

I guess I have completely the same problem, both on Windows NT (1) & 2000: for an undetermined period, the system doesn't allow renaming or deleting a folder which (itself or it's content) recently has been created/used, even though I *can* delete it's content. It's just the folder handling that doesn't behave properly, as if the notion that you are using a file stored in the folder doesn't disappear immediately (as it is supposed to) but only fades away slowly from the system's memory.

Hasse

ps. Notice that the <!post=old WinNT thread on Persistent folders,32826>old WinNT thread on Persistent folders<!/post> is very similar to this one here: no one of the (other) solutions works, except 'waiting untill the system changes it's mind'. So I left a remark there, pointing at your solution, too. (As well as at the MS Knowledge Base, BTW, which features in one of the other failing suggestions, too... )
