    1-Click TagPanel in PM

    Curious.

1-Click TagPanel when posting a reply is different than the one for a Private Message. Anyone know why that would be?
Specifcally, I miss having the ability to activate a post when sending a PM.

I guess that the designers wanted to present a compact form of the 1-Click TagPanel in a PM, since you're less likely to need a lot of markup in PM's. It gives you the most common tags and smilies in one handy panel.

You can use all tags in a PM, including those not shown in the compact version of the 1-Click TagPanel, by typing the tags yourself. In fact, I almost type the most common tags, and only use the 1-Click TagPanel for the ones I use only occasionally. If you hover the mouse over the tags, you will see the "code" you need.

For example, to refer to a post by number, use <!t>[post#=268484]<!/t>. This results in <post#=268484>post 268484</post#>.

    Hans:

Thanks! I wondered if, for some bizarre reason, the "post" link might cause some kind of "issue" in PM, so I didn't experiment with entering the code. Just can't imagine why something as pertinent as an active post link would have been omitted. I suppose I need to make a list of code for the ones I use most often. . . OR, quit being so lazy and start paying attention to the code rather than the tags.

I'm sure you don't want to add another piece of software "baggage" to your load for something like this, but just in case you hadn't thought about it..... For several years, I've used what I call a "macro" program for typing repetitive text that I use VERY frequently, like my name and address, email address, my web site URL - and so on. I have a few of the tags here in the Lounge in my macro toolbag like Quote, Post # and so on. So, when I'm in the middle of a post or a PM, all I have to do it hit Win-Ctrl-P and the characters in the post tag are typed for me. It so happens I use a program called QuicKeys which isn't cheap @ $100 but I've gotten several years of use out of it and never felt the need to pay for an upgrade. There ARE free ones around but I never could find one that suited my needs. FWIW.

    Al:

Appreciate the input Sarge! I've seen QuicKeys and agree that it's a pretty slick bit of software, but I just can't justify the cost in my case ( most all of the software I run has an autocomplete function of one form or another). Great to have the link here though, for anyone watching with an interest.

    Hey Bryan,
I think I may have the reason for the different tagpanels. The condensed one you see for PMs was actually the original one we had here when this iteration of the lounge came into being. (That's right, we didn't have NEARLY the amount of smilies as we have now!) When we started adding new features to the tagpanel the PM tagpanel was overlooked. Once we realized it, we agreed that it would just be too much unnecessary load to update them both. At least that's how I remember how it all went down. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15> <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Thanks for the "walk down memory lane" <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
I have been using Hans' suggestion (got out of lazy mode) and entering the code myself since that post. It's actually not that much more work - if any.
It just occurs to me that "new" visitors would encounter the same frustration. I was aware of entering the code directly, but because of their absence in the tag panel I thought perhaps it wasn't intended to be used there.

    Anyway, thanks for the history!
