TOC - Style - numbering takes font from heading? (Word 97)

I have been reading so much about Styles and numbering and have still no answer to my problem..

I have a style template that uses outline numbering. Believe it or not I have that part working! My problem is the TOC - when I regenerate it, the font size of the numbers becomes large and I am unable to change it.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, the font size of which numbers gets large - the numbers in the document or the numbers in the TOC? In theory, at least, the text in the Table of Contents will default to the TOC styles, but perhaps if you have applied direct formatting to the headings, that will be replicated in the Table of Contents.

The numbers in the table of contents are the problem.

I want the numbers to be the same font as the text.

Try editing the font sizes of your TOC1, TOC2 and TOC3 styles to match your Heading1, Heading2 and Heading3 styles, respectively. Does that do it?

Re: TOC - Style - numbering takes font from headin

    Hi Kerry:
A TOC will be formatted in the TOC1, TOC2, etc. style EXCEPT that it will pick up direct formatting from the styles it references. In this case, if you go to your heading 2 & 3 styles, right click & choose Bullets & Numbering/Customize.../Font, you will see that you set a font size for your numbering. Word looks at this as direct formatting & includes it in the TOC.

Basically, the numbering in the TOC, where you've changed the font type or size, is direct formatting in the heading styles & is picked up by the TOC. You can remove it by selecting the TOC & pressing Ctrl+Spacebar, which removes character formatting. However, it will reappear every time you update the TOC.

I can see the advantages of allowing direct formatting to be picked up by the TOC, but not in this case. I don't know any way around this. By the way, I notice that you're TOC styles are set to "update automatically" (Format/Style/Modify...). Except when you are actually creating the styles, I don't think that's a good idea. Every time you manually change the style, the style definition changes.
Wish I knew a better solution,

When you say match to the heading styles - that would make the text and numbering the same as the headings - wouldnt it?

Re: TOC - Style - numbering takes font from headin

If the text & numbering of the heading styles are the same, the TOC will use the TOC style definitions & apply the same font & numbering as the TOC styles. If the text & numbering of the heading styles are different, the TOC will apply the numbering font characteristics of the heading styles.

Golly - that is a bit to digest.

That says to me - that you cant have different numbre fonts for Headings and Table of Contents.

Re: TOC - Style - numbering takes font from headin

Well, almost. That's the results that I get in Word 2000. However, IF the heading style is a different size, etc. than the TOC style AND I don't select a font property for the heading numbering style that is different, Word seems to use the TOC style for numbering properties.

Numbering in Word has always been such a bugaboo that there are many nuances that I can't explain. I just sort of get it by trial & error (with a heavy emphasis on error). <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Yes Phil - I think you are absolutely correct. Numbering in Word is a right royal Pain! I will follow your lead and use the trial and error method.

If all else fails, perhaps I can convince the authors to forget numbers!!!! Yay!!
