    CPU at 100% (Windows XP)

I have a user who is having problems with Windows XP. There will be frequent brief moments when the computer seems to lock up for maybe 15-20 seconds. When looking at the task list (control-alt-delete) I notice CPU usage is 100 percent... it seems to show a spike on the chart, then quickly drops to zero. The effect is always triggered by a keystroke of some kind. This happens maybe half a dozen times a day. Any thoughts? Is there an app I could be looking for?
    Thanks

If you look at the Processes tab of the Task Manager, can you determine which process uses all that CPU time?
(Note: the "System Idle Process" always takes up the bulk of the total time; this just represents the processor twiddling its thumbs millions or billions of times per second)

This is obvious, but run Adaware and Spybot on because spyware can always contribute to these mini-freezes, and you might want to vet the processes that are running with help from Black Viper's List of Service Configurations, and also take a look to see if Startup on msconfig needs trimming.

If Hans' suggestion bears no fruit, you might consider using the Performance Monitor and watching different elements for spikes.

Keystrokes in any program? - or Office applications only?
Is there concurrent HD activity with the CPU spikes?
Do you have Outlook's journalling on, or the Indexing service running?
What are the swap file settings, and what does it look like in the defragging screen?

Problem was with explorer.exe -- hangs at 95 percent (the others push it over the top)

You said "WAS." Does that mean you fixed whatever the problem was? Do you mind sharing the solution with us, for the benefit of others? THANKS!
