    shutdown to reboot (XP)

    Hello all:

I'm not a computer genius, but I need help. I loaded XP Pro, and did the search for new updates on the install. After gettting it up and running, I tried to download the updates. It doesn't like my keycode for some reason. Anyway, the computer when I hit START and TURN OFF COMPUTER goes throught the logging off and shutting down, but then it reboots and comes back alive...I was unplugging the computer, but i lunched a hard drive. My wifes computer is loaded with the same software, and she has no troubles...I looked on this site and found things to check, like the "service.msc" but there is nothing glaring. It did download and auto-install updates other day, and I thought that might fix it, but no...Any help or further questions would be appreciated...Oh yeah, Norton and firewall are not installed yet...Just XP office and Counter-Strike at this time...

Any NIC's or modems installed? - some have a 'wake-up' facility.

Might also pay to check your power settings.

Yes...NIC installed and connected to a router (with wife computer) then cable modem. No settings have been changed, and no "wake-up" settings on.

Checked the power settings. It has power button to shutown. I even read on help to goto RUN and CMD and then type SHUTDOWN -S. This shuts down and reboots also...I'm perplexed!

OK, went back to previous updates...Went back before the auto update, and it still did the reboot...I went back to the day of the install, and now it works fine...I wonder what was wrong...I also wonder why my key code is invalid with the updates...Funny!

Did you do a clean install or a upgrade of Windows XP?
Also this copy has NOT been used on another machine?
You are using the key code that is on the package?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
