    Frontpage Counter? (Frontpage 2000)

I have recently changed web providers, and so have had to re-upload my whole site. I cannot seem to get my counter to reset to the number it was at previously; I have already asked a few people how to reset it, and no one seems to know.

My provider does support Frontpage, and I have my Frontpage extensions installed. My counter is working, I just can't get it to reset. Does anyone know how?

The count is held in a file in the _private folder in the root of your web. It's name is derived the the name of the page you have it in, so if your counter is in index.htm, there will be a file called index.htm.cnt.

I too have failed to find an easy and automatic method to reset the count. Setting the "Reset" value to what you want in the hit counter properties will change the value in the above file locally, but it seems to make no impact on the remote web, regardless of the options chosen at publish time.

The method I use is to manually transfer it after changing the contents of the local file:
Open your (e.g.) C:websMyWeb_privateindex.htm.cnt file with a text editor such as Notepad. The contents will be something like:<pre>FPCountFile 00000000001</pre>

and alter to your required number.

Upload the amended file via FTP or other means - my preferred method is using Internet Neighborhood which simply adds your remote web(s) to Windows Explorer and 'uploading' is as simple as using Copy and Paste. (Note: Using Internet Neighborhood should not be used as a replacement for publishing FP components, but if you simply want to update a file it takes some beating.)

What about opening the web remotely? file>open web and then selecting http://www.yourweb.com and then using the counter-properties reset function? that way it would be modifying the remote index.htm.cnt file and not the local one?

I havent tried this, but I have opened webs remotely. it's a little slow (depending on your connection) but it works.

It's a piece of cake to open the site on its web host. One caution on changing a file on the web. It could be that the next time you upload new or changed files using FP, you'll change them back again to whatever they are on your system's disk.

When I want to alter my hit counter, in FP i just delete the one in place and re-install setting the desired number as provided in the dialog box. Then save it and publish away. <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16>

Thanks so much! I got it working through Notepad. Uploaded it with WS_FTP to www.vannercentral.com.
