Recovering Favorites (IE6.0)

I had to reinstall Win XP and lost all of my Favorites. What is the file extension for Favorites/Links so that I can search and import them back again?

Links to files and folders have extension .lnk, links to web pages have extension .url. These extensions are hidden even if you show all extensions in Windows Explorer; you can search for *.lnk and *.url, however.

    Hi, Eli ~

If you would like to have the extensions shown for '.lnk' and '.url' file types:<UL><LI>Open the registry editor and navigate to:<UL><LI>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTlnkfile<LI>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTInternetShortcut
<LI>Delete the NeverShowExt key in the right hand pane
Be sure to export a copy of the entire reg keys in the event you desire to change it back.

    Hans,

Thank you for the information. I've tried to Import the Favorites but I keep getting a message that the path is invalid. Any suggestions?

Do you get the error when you try to import them or when you try to use them? The location for favorites in Windows XP is

    Cocuments and Settings<username>Favorites

where <username> is your Windows user name, if they are your personal favorites, or

    Cocuments and SettingsAll UsersFavorites

if they are shared between all users of the PC.

    <hr> Cocuments and SettingsAll UsersFavorites

if they are shared between all users of the PC. <hr>
That's what I thought too, but it doesn't work that way on my setup. running IE6 on XP Home (SP1)? The same problem applies to SendTo, which I would have also expected to be shared under All Users. Both problems have existed since I bought the system, and after an initial failed search for solutions I've just lived with the limitation.

The All Users Desktop, Start Menu, and Documents work fine, as expected.

I thought I had found a good workaround a few days ago with <!post= Indirect folder links, 269088> Indirect folder links<!/post>, but would prefer the real McCoy, if it's supposed to work that way. Where do you suggest I start digging to try and find the problem?

<img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15> Cocuments and SettingsAll UsersFavorites doesn't work on my system (Windows XP Home SP-1, IE6) either. I thought I saw an item in my Favorites menu that was only in the All UsersFavorites folder, and not in <myusername>Favorites, but I was mistaken <img src=/S/stupidme.gif border=0 alt=stupidme width=30 height=30>.

I searched the MS Newsgroups. It seems that All UsersFavorites basically does nothing. You can have all users share the same favorites by pointing their Favorites to All UsersFavorites (this is a registry setting that you can change with RegEdit or TweakUI), but WinXP does not automatically merge your personal favorites with those in All Users. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

    Re: Recovering Favorites (IE6.0)

Thanks for the confirmation. I wouldn't beat myself up over it though. I had a hard time trying to figure out what I was doing wrong when I couldn't get it to work. Especially when I had a 1000+ page "must-have reference" telling me that how useful it was, and even MS Press publications contain fiction: All of which leads me to think it was supposed to work that way, but someone stuffed up along the way. What I have trouble with is that I've been unable to find any useful information on this in any of the usual sources.

But at least with my link workaround I can set up shared favorites and sento, although not quite as elegantly as the merged shares for the start menu and the desktop.
