Personalize Win Update 2 (WinXP Home SP!)

I am starting a NEW thread on this same subject, since it was decided that it had wandered off course from the original.

IT DID, but so have a LOT of others that haven't been locked out. The least that could have done was to advise me that it was done, so that I could have started a new thread like this and not waiting for any email responses to my legitimate request for help.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I usually check Windows Update on a regular basis, not automatic. This last time it came up with a "new" NVidia driver that was just approved. However, I am currently using a newer version direct from NVidia. (even if it isn't yet approved by MS, it works fine )
In the past, you were able to click on " personalize your Windows update" and could hide any of the recommended updates, and thus not see them every time you checked for new updates.
When I try to do this, that particular NVidia driver is NOT listed there and there is no apparent way to HIDE this thing. There are many other items in this area to check or un-check, but no place for NVidia.

Does anyone know if this is unique to driver files updates or is this another fluke in Update?

Re: Personalize Win Update 2 (WinXP Home SP!)

This is I guess repetition. It was the first problem I ever noticed early on with Windows Update, and I don't know a way around it except to know it will happen and because video drivers are so important to people because of games and image software and the increased use of computers for all kinds of video capability, one of the best things to do is to find video driver update sites or driver update sites--there are a number of free good ones and some also context and provide info on the drivers. It would be ideal if Windows Update did this, but a shortcut to a couple good driver sites whether hardware or the Beta Windows sites which hawk video drivers or game sites can do this well for you I think.

I linked a couple--I'll try to find some of the best ones I can. The avid gamers are good at these sites. Where are you cowboydawg?

Re: Personalize Win Update 2 (WinXP Home SP!)

SMBP,

It's not that I can't get the latest drivers for my software, It's the fact that MS wants me to upgrade them to any earlier "approved" version via WIN Update, and I don't want them. I DO want to be able to HIDE them when I go into Update. You could hide them, by using the "personalize update" link, but the drivers aren't listed there. ( in this case the NVidia drivers )
Now, every time I check Win Update, it's says there are "new" drivers available.

I understand--you don't want it to invite you to install a driver only to click on it and find out you have a later one. It used to do that to me for the longest time. Right now, it's ghosted out when I run WU.

SMBP,
Any idea how you got it to be ghosted out?
I also sent in a blurb to MS on this question and just got a email back ( from a rep who admitted to NOT being a Tech Support type ) sending me to a MSKB article that really only was about configuring AUTO WU. Sent a reply back, telling them it didn't apply to my question, try again.
So I'll see what happens maybe Monday when a Tech come in to work?
Keep you posted.

I do NOT use any device updates from WU. I will go to the OEM and then get current if needed. By doing this I just ignore the "Device updates"

I agree. I have taken this route with nearly everything they offer by going to the source for drivers or the Beta update sites which list them, and using the Technet Security newsletter to see if I'm interested in the security patches patch--trying to check around and see if there is any trouble with the patch and have been able to hold back to see how the patch plays. If it's something like Win Media Player or say Outlook Express or IE, I'll hear easily, and then go there to get the download.

Re: Personalize Win Update 2 (WinXP Home SP!)

Bob--

I really don't; and yesterday it was; today it's not. I played with Personalize recently, but that's not helping with this. It says I don't "need" any drivers. I really go to it rarely because the Security Bulletins take care of the vast majority of them, and I check Office Update from the office websites where I go to look for tips or see what they are putting up to promote 2003--if WMP or some other component is going to have an update, I'm going to hear about it from checking with the Beta sites/CNET/Slashdot or the MS watch type sites every few days.

Win Update's Driver Selection

I noticed the Corporate Site has a slightly different interface--a hyperlink to find driver updates that lists the type of hardware devices when you click it. Probably cosmetic--It will search and list all the NVidia drivers available but doesn't pinpoint the latest one needed.

The way Win Update is supposed to work with drivers is that each device has a hardware ID that's unique. Plug and Play ID's include hardware ID's and compatible ID's., and the list of these supported by an individual driver is in the inf file. If the hardware ID of the device exactly matches one supported by the driver, there's a hardware match. If some other match occurs, say device hardware ID to driver compatible ID then there's a compatible match. Drivers with both are download candidates. If a hardware or compatible match exists, WU is supposed to determine whether the driver it has is newer than the one installed, and present it to you only if it is. If it's a better match, it's supposed to offer it to you. If you decide to download it, the file is downloaded and the Active X points Device Manager to the .inf file for installation.

Win XP also uses driver ranking. It ranks drivers by whether they are signed and how closely their Plug and Play ID matches the device's plug and play ID. It also uses other factors I won't bore you with here. It uses the driver scheme to rank from lowest (best match) to highest.

This is how it works--I don't know how this can be used to make it work correctly. I found this CNET Article What to Do When Windows Update Won't Update. This patch is fairly recent and we all love patches. Maybe it will help and you can always boot it off.

This is one of many KB's that says SP1 will solve a problem that SP1 does nothing to solve.

Win Update at the Registry

I bet there is a registry value to disable the driver component if you poke around there--but you always get into how specifically they decided to name that part of the registry. I did see this. There is a way to disable the WU device driver wizard. That may do it for you:

Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called "NoDevMgrUpdate" and set it according to the value data below.
Registry Settings

User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionPolicies
Explorer]
Value Name: NoDevMgrUpdate
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = default, 1 = remove update)

Re: Personalize Win Update 2 (WinXP Home SP!)

SMBP,
Thanks for your efforts to solve this annoying problem.
I checked through your suggested KB articles without any luck. Then tried the reg hack shown at the bottom of your post. Really thought that would do it, but........no good. Still showed the driver there and the check for drivers in WU.

Then I received this from MS support in answer to my same request to them.

------------------------------------------------------
Thank you for contacting Microsoft Update Support.

My name is Eish, and I will be working with you on this issue today. I understand that you need assistance hiding NVidia driver update from the list of updates that are shown when you scan for updates. I would like to inform you that you cannot hide driver and critical updates from Personalize section of Windows Update site. You can only personalize Windows Updates. When you scan for updates, by default only critical updates are selected for installation the rest of the updates you need to add manually. If you do not wish to install update for NVidia driver update you need not to select it from the updates shown.
----------------------------------------------------

In other words they say: Just ignore it. ( something like DaveA's post) Swell, good answer. So who knows, maybe there still is way out via the reg? Have to keep checking.

Re: Personalize Win Update 2 (WinXP Home SP!)

Bob--

I was trying to provide a context with many of the links incl. KB's that they don't help; however modifying the registry value should be able to turn off driver notification selectively and one of the links to Lars was an OK source for drivers. Once again, I turned to the registry for a go around. I think the answer is quintissentially representative of why Microsoft remains a producer of really mediocre rather than superlative operating systems and always really will and what I was getting at on the last locked thread. I appreciate and always have reminded myself of what Mark and Joe said extremely well on the prior thread that of course one can't expect an operating system to run with every kind of permutation and combination of software, and bugs, and spyware and hardware out there and that Microsoft is doing an awfully good job of trying

It's no kind of tangent, but I have seen this attitude so many times. I also think much of their support is told to back away from the registry so that the hoi polloi won't get themselves in trouble or get mad at MS, when I've come to accept the fact that if you want to tweak and do something about glitches and annoyances, you really have to approach it the way I've seen on so m any good threads in the lounge--TimOz's Indirect Folder Links a good example--be willing to explore as you do and dig in to the possibilities of pushing the envelop of what can be done tweak-wise, and like Gloria Vanderbilt once said, you can't ever be too thin or too rich or know the Windows registry too well.

I want to stay focused on trying to help you solve this problem; I'm optimistic there is a go-around somewhere and we can find it. I hoped that being able to turn off driver notification or modifiying/renaming a value at that registry key was the answer--I will keep looking further.

Interestingly, in looking at many books that discuss Win Update, none talks about the "driver glitch" but it is all over the web in group threads--in particular with nVidia video drivers because they are so well known and widely used.

Re: Personalize Win Update 2 (WinXP Home SP!)

Another update from MS. I asked to have the "problem" escalated to a higher level of tech support. Here is their answer:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
I understand you would like to disable the prompt for the driver update that you are receiving when accessing the Windows Update site. I am sorry but you would not be able to do so. I would like to explain myself to you.

You are right, you were able to do so previously. However, from the time Microsoft has updated its Windows Update site, you can only personalize Updates for Windows. Critical updates and driver updates cannot be personalized. Microsoft has done this in view of the fact that both the critical updates and the driver updates are vital for the system. As you have mentioned that you have the latest driver for Vida you need not install the driver update. If you need any further clarification on this issue I would suggest that you contact Vida technical support, as they would be best able to assist you.

I on my part would be forwarding your suggestion to our management team for review. Feedback such as yours help us to move one step closer to our goal. Please continue to sent us your valuable feedbacks
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

contact Vida technical support, as they would be best able to assist you .
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can anyone think of WHY I would contact NVidia for an answer to a WIndows update change?????
I am impressed !!! Pass the buck again.

Re: Personalize Win Update 2 (WinXP Home SP!)

Obviously if you or I are nVidia--or any other GPU designer and Microsoft has a tool to check the driver updates how in the world are we responsible for the way Microsoft's geiger counter detects our products? Microsoft does write the code for WU. It's their baby. There are always situations where there are problems with products of large companies like conflicts with Symantec's Norton Antivirus and something in a Microsoft OS where you would think they might get together and resolve the problem--I don't mean of course all the software out there, but software one of their Platinum partners makes in large part because of a Windows OS.

I just have a feeling that someone would be able to do a regedit that could selectively stop your driver detection and I wish I could find it.
