    IE 6 Download (6.0)

Running WIN 98SE & IE 6.0 all patches applied to both. When I click on a url to download a *.exe file, IE open's a new web page with the file name at the end of the address. I can right click on the url and download the file fine. I can also download files with other extensions. I have found nothing on Microsoft's website so I have tried deleting the index.dat file from temporary internet files, repairing & re-installing IE 6 but i think it might be a file association or registry error. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Re: IE 6 Download (6.0)

Found the answer on another website:
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
    Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
    Start/Run menu applet execute: Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a normal
    safety precaution.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftInternet
    ExplorerPluginsExtension.exe
If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed. The
    key does not normally exist
