Word asks me to update links (2000/SR1)

All of a sudden when I open a specific Word document, Word notes that the file is linked to other files and it asks me if I want to update the links. The specific message is attached.

I have only recently got this message despite working on the same file (a user guide) for more than a year. Recently the file passed the 2 MB mark. There are about 160 linked bmps and Visio files.

Any idea why this message suddenly appeared?

    Many TIAs,

Looking at Edit > Links will tell you what document you have linked to. I usually find that this is enough for me to diagnose this kind of problem.

    Thanks for your swift reponse.

I have checked everything that I'm linked to and all seems in order, and there is certainly no major change in the files that are linked since the days when the message did not appear to today where the message appears every time.

This is not a major problem as it doesn't stop me working, I'm just wondering why this message has begun appearing all of a sudden.

When you look at Edit > Links what do you see in the Update column for each of your linked objects?
You should get this question if any of them is set to Auto

Aha! Thanks, and this kills two birds with one stone.
    1. My Visio files were indeed set to Auto and I have now set them to Man.
    2. I asked the Lounge why my linked Visio files always lost their relative path and had it a replaced with an absolute path. I assume that changing their update status form Auto to Man will also solve that problem.

This doesn't explain why the message only started appearing last week but the main thing is to have the solution.

    Many thanks,

    Hi David:
Take a look at Tools/Options/General & see if "Update automatic links on open" is ticked. UNchecking it should prevent the message...(or is it checking it?).

Thanks Phil. I think that must be why I'm all of a sudden getting the message. The question is, how did the field get checked...

In answer to my Visio question, where the LINK field converts my relative paths to absolute paths. I think that the LINK field just doesn't support relative paths.

    Thanks for writing,

Re: Word asks me to update links (2000/SR1)

    Hi David:
I'm not familiar with Visio, but...If you insert a hyperlink into a saved file, it should be relative. If the destination document hasn't been saved, then the hyperlink is absolute (because an unsaved document doesn't have a "location").
    Cheers,

If you use SpyBot to remove MRUs or other tracks (or probably any other program simlar to SpyBot) it often removes some of the settings from Office programs.

    Hi Peter:
I'd be very surprised if Spybot changed an Update links option. This setting is part of a binary value found in the DATA key in the registry.

Re: Word asks me to update links (2000/SR1)

I don't use SpyBot and the files I link to are saved files. When I use Insert|Object to insert a Visio file, initially the link is absolute and using Shift+F9 I manually edit the link to make it relative, just as I do with bmp's inserted using Insert|Picture|From file.

However, when I save, Word always updates the link to make it relative. I changed the link settings to Manual for the Visio files but that didn't seem to help.

    Thanks for all advice,

    David

Thanks for writing. I don't use SpyBot or similar.
