    Pandora--

Make sure your cleaning includes Ad-Aware and Spybot and running the System File Checking tool by going to the command prompt and 1) Typing "sfc /purgecache" and after running that (seconds) 2) "sfc/scannow"--lose quotes/won't hurt you/can replace damaged files. Will prompt for XP CD; may have to hit retry several times (20-30 minutes). Spyware/BHO's and the like are frequently picked up from webpages, downloads and can cause this behavior. Also during the freezes check Task Manager (performance and processes)and use "perfmon" in the runbox to check performance monitor if need be. See if any process is disproportionaly CPU intensive.

Are you sure it is not going into hibernation?
If is, it can take up to 5-10 minutes to wake up.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

no -- it usually just freezes on whatever happens to be on the screen -- be it a program or just the desktop. occasionally the screen just goes black and everything freezes. weird, eh? fyi -- hibernation mode in disabled on this system. btw -- we just did the adaware and spybot cleanup and rebooted (got rid of much junk) and it's still happening. probably 3-4 times in the last hour -- exasperating! we're going to try the system file checker and see if that helps next.

Look at Task Manager when this happens (ctrl + alt + delete). You can usually always get a look at it, and see if there is any helpful info--and check the list of processes and see if there is an offending CPU gobbler you can do anything about. Also, look at the list of things logged on event viewer, and see if you can pick off any consistent problems during the time this happened--errors or warnings under all the categories of event viewer. You also have no download to running System File Checker--they may not be the cause, but if there are some corrupt files it should and does replace them most of the time.

This won't stop the freezes, but often a quick way to get out of the freeze is to get up Task Manager either by right clicking the taskbar, or ctrl+alt+delete, going to the "Applications tab," and clicking "New Task" and typing in explorer.exe. This often loads epxlorer, and will stop the freeze. Thanks to TimOz for this.

Another thing to consider is whether your processor could be overheating. If Sony has some sort of motherboard monitor, you could use it to check and alert on temperature issues.

I had similar symptoms with my old Gateway and I wasted ages trying to to pin down the software problem that was causing the random freezes. The physical cause became obvious only towards the end with the increased frequency. My system was a tower, not a laptop, but laptops are even more sensitive to heat problems.

One thing you can do that will give you an idea about a over heating problem is to Shut your Computer Down for about 30 min to an hour, and then turn it back on. If it takes a while before it starts Freezing up on ya. Good chance that your Heatsink Fan is out or going out.

I see that this has been mentioned, but when it freezes up, pick up the laptop and feel the bottom. Is it excessively hot? If you can make s'mores on it, I'd suspect that's the issue.

My IBM portable has little feet that flip out so you can prop it up. Perhaps your Vaio has the same feature?

I know the problem well! I have a FX401 which exhibits exactly the same problem. Interestingly (!) it's a heck of a lot worse if I convert the C drive to NTFS format - lock-ups happen every 30 minutes or so then! At the moment it will run for days without anything happening and then freeze three of four times in a day. Unfortunately, the poster who suggested the taskbar / Ctrl-Alt-Del route hasn't appreciated the real problem. When we say freeze, we mean freeze - nothing except the power button works and that's only available for total power off! Sony have no idea apart from blaming me for having the nerve to install software - e.g. MSO!

Temperatures? The memory gets a little warm but SandraPro only indicates circa 30C which is well within limits ...

    Any other ideas anyone? <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>
