    Double Icons when downloading anything?

For some time I've noticed that whenever I download anything from the internet and save it to my desktop I get 2 icons. One is a folder with the actual information I wanted and the other seems to be a browser blank page with a blue "e" on it for explorer. I' m using AOL 8.0 + with the AOL Browser and I don't recall it doing this before and I'm sure it's not supposed to. When I try to open the page I usually get a breakdown of the contents in separate files like you would by opening a file in explorer. I have no idea what is happening and why it's doing this. It was happening before I installed AOL 8.0 with 7.0 also?Any ideas?

I don't know the answer, but a few questions might help illuminate what's happening. If you right click the "shortcut" & choose properties, is there a target that gives you a clue? When you open it, what do you mean that you get a "breakdown of the contents in separate files"? I'm not familiar with the AOL browser but have you checked all your preferences?

This sounds similar to an IE hijacking. AOL likes to play games with your system and may have installed some form of tracker or call home application that is causing the extra icon.
I've just posted to the IE forum with some info that might help you.

Ok I rechecked and I explained it backwards. Let's say I get a promo from MicroWarehouse for some electronics. I decide to save the page to my desktop. I get an Icon like a blank document with the "e" explorer logo on it and that is actually the HTML file I want. In addition to that I get another folder with the same name (manila color folder like a new folder) and if you try to open that it gives you say 10 or 12 other files that you have to choose what application to open it with that I obviously don't need. Now, I can delete the extra folder to the recycle bin and the HTML file I saved is still there. I wind up with a bunch of double icons in the course of many sessions and then have to go back and delete the extra Folders because they clog up my desktop. That's it in a nut.

The Lounge web page you are looking at now consists of more than just HTML. There are several graphics files (the userpics, smilies etc.), some javascript, and a stylesheet that controls the layout. Al these extra elements are stored as separate files in a folder with the same name as the HTML file. If you delete or remove the folder, the HTML page will not display correctly any more. With some web pages, this will hardly be noticeable, but try it on the page you're looking at and you will see what I mean. So the extra folder is not there for nothing.
