Re: Free E-mail Accessible via Microsoft Outlook

Any reason not to use your @hamilton.edu address? What's the attraction of having a webmail address?

Re: Free E-mail Accessible via Microsoft Outlook

    Jon,

I have a free internet email account with MyRealBox , which is based on Novell NetMail and eDirectory. Novell uses the MyRealBox essentially as a very large beta test site for NetMail; however I've been using it for over a year and haven't noticed any problems. There are occasional publised outages for upgrades, but they never last more than a few hours.

There is no advertising and virtually no spam on MyRealBox. (The only spam I get I can track to stupidity on my own part, providing my email address to someone I shouldn't have. It originates from the same domain, and I've never received more than 2 messages in any one day; often weeks go by with no spam). MyRealBox also provides 10 MB of free internet email ( unlike the measly 2MB you get for a free Hotmail account). I have also configured it as an IMAP/STMP account within Outlook; although I occasionally log on through the internet as well, to purge old files and take care of housekeeping.

The only real drawback is that Novell doesn't always accept new users. They do have a waiting list if they are currently closed to new accounts. IMHO, it is well worth the wait.

    Hi, Jon ~

Are you aware of the feature to block everything on your hotmail account? I have not had one spam period in the last three months in my anon hotmail account.

    Hi Jon

I'm with Bruce on this. The only email I receive on my Hotmail account is from senders to whom I've given my address, and, of course, Microsoft.
Check your settings........you can block the spam.

    Have a Great day!!!

I agree with Samantha, myrealbox.com is a great e-mail provider.

    Hi Bruce,

Yes, I'm aware of that option, but it doesn't suit my needs; I'm unaware of every person, in advance, who will send me e-mail.

    Thanks anyway; I appreciate it.

Re: Free E-mail Accessible via Microsoft Outlook

    Hi, Jon ~

That is confusing - do you mean you expect unsolicited e-mail from those you have never had contact previously?

If that is not the case, then you simply add addresses of those individuals you send mail to or those in your address book to the white list, regardless of any advance awareness of possible e-mail.

    Hi Bruce,

Yes, in answer to your question; how can I possibly know everybody who will want to e-mail me--and whose e-mails I will want to read?

    Thanks again.

Re: Free E-mail Accessible via Microsoft Outlook

    Hi Jon

I seldom use Hotmail, I only check it once a month, but anybody (who knows it) can email me at my Hotmail address. I don't have to "tell Hotmail" to accept their message.
Having said that, Hotmail must have some effective spam filtering because virtually no spam gets through.
I'm not enthusiastic about Hotmail and I'm not sure that I trust them to respect my privacy but they do provide throwaway annonymity.
I have no idea what specific settings I might have invoked, so I'm afraid I can't offer any suggestions as to where to look.

    Have a Great day!!!

    Hi, Jon ~

...how can I possibly know everybody who will want to e-mail me...

You e-mailed them with your address.....so you have their address. Subsequently, you add it to the whitelist. This keeps out the mail from people you never gave your address, namely spammers.

People can't e-mail you unless you gave them your address, Jon, right? That is how you would determine those who want to e-mail you.

(Edited by DaveA on 01-Jul-03 18:49. )
You will find that most spammers have a program(s) that will send email to "Common" names at ALL of the big ISP's. That is why one who uses a very strange set of letters as the user name will get very few. Also using Hotmail, on the sign up page there is a list of different permissions check boxes. If you did not remove the check box in the entry about being added to the Hotmail address list, you user name was opened to the public.

    (edit)
For a Clean user account, go to myway.com, I have NOT received ANY email there except for what I have requested.

    Hi Jonathan...

I've recently started using HotPOP as a mail forwarding option, as it will send email to upto 3 separtate accounts. It doesn't provide webmail free, but you can get it for a small price.

    Maybe something to consider???

Hey, I'd forgotten about myway.com. You are right, no spam at all! But last time I checked you could not use it with Outlook (pop). They said that it was a feature they were working on. Perhaps you can now???
