Moving programs to slave drive (XP Pro SP1)

My master drive (on which Windows is installed) is filling up,and I have a 60G slave drive with 3 partitions, currently used for data storage. One partition is nearly empty. I would like to move some programs which are space hogs, used occasionally but are important (e.g. OCR, graphics software) to the empty partition. Can I expect proper function of the software if I do move it away from the system drive, and what is the best way to carry out the process?
Several of the prgrams have progressive updates and service packs, so a simple copy/paste would make life easy. Do I have to uninstall from the current drive and reinstall the new location?
Thank you for your collective wisdom!

First things first. Unless it's an older DOS program that doesn't care about location and isn't 'registered" in Windows, you CAN'T do it with copy and paste. There are programs out there that will "move" all references of a software installation, but the couple I've tried always had some shortcoming that caused me to abandon the attempt. The last one I remember trying was from PowerQuest and I think it used to come bundled with Partition Magic. Not sure any more since it's been awhile. The long and short of MY opinion, you'd be a lot better off to un-install from C: and re-install to the partition of your choosing. You should not suffer ANY performance penalties, assuming you've got normal acting hard drives.

    Cowboydog,
You forgot all of the "Registry" entries for each program that would need to be changed.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

... Master Sargent Big Al...

That's only an expression of ONE of my unfulfilled goals in my lifetime! But obviously you (and Dave) realized how complex it can be to try moving (fixing) ALL the registry entries for a program. In my experience it only worked about half the time - using utility software. It was just a lot less headache to uninstall and reinstall.

Master Sargent Big Al is probably correct. You might save yourself a lot of head aches if you just remove and install them on the Slave Drive that you wish to use. One thing I really never tried though is to copy and paste a program and all it's files to another Drive, and then create a short cut on C: pointing to it's new location. And then remove it from it's old location to create your needed space. { wouldn't that work Doc?} It might be worth a try. I mean at the worst you would just have to reinstall it on the Slave Drive anyway if it didn't work properly. But I'm also thinking your going to have to go in and change the registry entries of that Program to point to it's new location. Man oh man, Dang it, it's already statring to sound like a lot of trouble doing it that way. OK I just talked myself right out of that Idea. I think I would stick to Doc's way!! Sorry for the confusion, my fingers are typing faster then my Brain is working.

Dave. ME DID NOT. If you look real close you will see what I said about the Registry. I highlighted it for ya.

Thank you for the wise counsel. Will follow the basic golden rule of computing - do it properly the first time and save days/weeks of anguish (well, mostly)!
