text format marker (XL 97 sr2 on Win 2K/NT4)

I have a column formatted as 'General' but holding only text and each cell entry is preceded with a '. The column came to me like this.

From the dawn of time (well early versions of Lotus 123 at least) a ' used in this way formats the cell to 'Text'. Given that this character is redundant I thought I'd simply use the Replace feature (replace ' with nothing) to get rid of them but XL says it can't find any ' in the column.

What's the magic words I must use in the replace feature to make XL find a ' in this context?

    1) Put the number one (1) in a blank cell. It can be anywhere you can delete it later)
    2) select the cell with the number one and press ctrl-c to copy it to clipboard
    3) Highlight your range of text
    4) edit - Paste special - select "Multiply" <OK>

The cells should have the single quote/apostrophe removed from the front.
