downloading multiple files

greetings from the great white north!!!

in woody's windows XP watch (wwwXP, i call it) 3.22, i read about how to change the Registry in winXP so that you can/could download more than two files at one time. as i do a lot of music downloads (legally!), i thought that this would be a great thing to know, so i tried it.

i got as far as locating the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionnternetSettings . at this point, i was supposed to click on the Edit menu, and then click on New | DWORD value and make an entry. here's the problem: there is NO New option on the Edit menu. HELP! what do i do now? does the Win2K menu differ that much from the WinXP menu?

it's a PITA being restricted to two downloads at a time, especially since it seems that i can only open my email on one particular site a few times daily, and they aren't the same times each day, either! that also drives me nuts, but i don't think that all y'all can fix that problem, so i will just ask for your collective brain power on this one.

as usual, for your help. take care and God bless.

Did you right click on HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionnternetSettings? You should be able to right click on that key and a window come up that gives you those options.

    Re: downloading multiple files

Have you considered a download manager? I use FreshDownload from FreshDevices to get multiple files at a time, and have not had any problems using it on any version of Windows (9x, ME, 2k, or XP). One of the side effects of running this program is that it made all the necessary adjustments to the registry so that even when I don't want to use the download manager I get the benefit of being able to download multiple files at once while using Internet Explorer.

thanks for the thought, cowboy. went in and tried it, but it didn't work; the file just sat there and looked at me. guess i'll have to either find another way around it, or just put up with it. take care and God bless.

no, david, i hadn't, but only because i didn't know that such things existed. i'll take a look around, and see what's out there, aside, of course, from the program that you so kindly suggested. i like to try things on for size before i commit myself, as resources are always tight, and it behooves me to be frugal (not the word i want, but you get the idea?) with my sweetheart's . hey, if something will make the registry changes for me, and work right at the same time, that's okay fine by me! thanks for your suggestion. take care and God bless.

Well, you shouldn't have to worry about 'resources' since FreshDownload is, like many other download managers, completely . I only suggest this one since I have had a lot of success with it and it doesn't come with any intrusive spyware.

    Re: downloading multiple files

    okay david-

i downloaded it, fine. now, if only i could figure out how to use it... when i clicked on the files that i wanted to download, i got a screen that said that it (the program) detected that the files were actually HTML, and that it was recommended that i either choose Yes to open the link or No to download. i chose No, as all i wanted to do was download the files, then everything disappeared. where did my downloads go? how do i use this thing? the info that i found, and printed, doesn't make much sense to me. if you'd like, could and would, and if you don't mind, please explain it to me, off board, probably, as i can foresee this taking some time. my profile shows that i accept private e-mails, so have at it, if you have the time.

i do for your help, however, and for pointing me in the direction of this program, especially since it's ! those are the best kind, as far as i am concerned. until the next time, take care and God bless.
