Format problem with Mail Merge (Word XP)

I am having a problem with data/number formats when I do a merge from Excel to Word. The format is correct in Excel but does strange things in Word. Anyone have any suggestions??
    Examples:
    Excel Word
    60.80 60.80000000000
    1:00:01 1:00 AM * this should display hh:mm:ss

One way to get around this is to select Tools | Options... in Word. In the General tab, check the "Confirm conversions on open" box, then click OK.
When you select the data source anew, you will be asked which method to use. Select Excel by DDE. The formats you set in Excel should now be carried over to Word (thanks to Phil Rabichow for this tip).

You can also set the format in Word; this will work independently of the method you use to open the data source.
In the merge document (with the field codes), type Alt+F9 to display all field codes. The merge fields look like { MERGEFIELD fieldname }.
For a numeric field, insert # "0.00" before the closing bracket. This will round to 2 decimals.
For a time field, insert @ "hh:mm:ss" before the closing bracket.
