While the renovations are under way

    <img src=/S/hello.gif border=0 alt=hello width=25 height=29> Lounger Masters

I have noticed something very <font color=red>BAD </font color=red>. It seems that during the renovations on the Lounge, and sections of the Lounge, some functions have been turned off.

I am not getting updates that a response has been added to the thread, and I also have not been getting any digest messages, since May 15th?!

Any idea when these will be coming back online?

Re: While the renovations are under way

I do not believe it is a Lounge problem as I have heard of no other instances of this happeneing.
Can you check your profile for the email address you are using for 'admin' purposes?

Thanks for your reply. OK I did check my profile, and I did look at it very carefully, but I did not see anything that changed.

I want to know where I can go and subscribe to the fora, (Execl, Windows 2000, Hardware, Word...) to see if my subscription has changed, or maybe I need to redo this work.

I used to get a daily digest of all the messages in theses fora, that i subscribed to, and this stopped around May 15th. I just noticed this because I just returned to the Lounge.

Thanks for all your help, if your reply come to my e-mail, then I'll reply to you sooner, and the problem will be solved.

If you use the Controls link at the top of the page, and find this icon <IMG SRC=http://www.wopr.com/w3timages/email.gif>, you should be able to subscribe to the boards of your choice.

OK I got it fixed now, but some where some how, I got all my favorite settings turned off.

Now I turned them back on, and let see what goes on. Did anything happen to make these changes take effect, or is it simply me being a bit absent from the Lounge for a while?

In any case, now I think my settings are back to the way I last had them.

I don't know, I'm not an Admin, but I've heard that if your mail bounces back (e.g., address invalid or mailbox full), the server might halt your subscription. Not sure if I heard this about the newsletters or the Lounge mail.

You need to NOTE that AOL and MSN have started to block ALL machine generated email. One of the local webmasters was having all kinds of problems, until he found this out. There is NO work around.

Ok, the curiosity bone is itching again!

How do they identify machine generated email from an email I might send to a ? (If the explanation is too long, or too complicated, I won't ask you to post the details.)

    Thanks.

Re: While the renovations are under way

Received the following from the webmaster that told me about this.
<hr> <font color=blue>Neither AOL or MSN document exactly how they do it (for obvious reasons).

But, I do not believe they detect it as "generated by a web-site", but look to determine what "program" has created the message. While they do not publish exactly how they identify it, one of the more likely ways is to look at the "headers" of the Email message. One of the elements in there (if present) is the identity of the originating Mail Client. In the case of sites following standards , we DO mark the Email as originating from a WebSite Script.

Thus, the receiving Email server is likely making their decision to dump based upon the identity of the originating computer and the tool used to create the message. In the case of the Site's Bulk Email function and by "some" Mail Server definitions of Junk Email, the results of the Bulk Email function IS junk Email. We may not agree with their definition, but we have little recourse except to look for other ways to communicate more effectively.

There are also other tactics used by some (I think AOL at least does this) where their Mail Servers watch the "rate" at which Email messages with the same content from the same "source" arrives and if it arrives "too quickly" (meaning, faster than a human could type the individual messages), they deem the subsequent messages SPAM and start dumping them.</font color=blue> <hr>

    Hope this helped.

    That's great, thanks.

Not sure it will help our filtering but it is interesting to know how the Big Boys approach the problem of Spam.

Re: While the renovations are under way

I just read an article from CBS Marketwatch "Fighting Back - Eight tips to block or reduce e-mail spam" that cited the amount of spam that AOL was blocking had tripled between February and April to 2.4 billion messages per day. How much of this dramatic increase can be attributed to blocking legitimate mailing lists that are auto-generated? <img src=/S/hmmn.gif border=0 alt=hmmn width=15 height=15> Perhaps its time someone sat the big ISP's down for a little talk on not interfering with their customers' contractual rights to receive email of their own choosing. <img src=/S/scold.gif border=0 alt=scold width=50 height=15>

Speaking from personal experience, one possiblility is that you inadvertenly turned off the subscription. At least on my daily digest emails, the link to access the forum is very close to the link to unsubscribe, and if you're not careful you can easily hit the wrong link and unsuscribe yourself.

    I don't think that my e-mail bounced, because this is my main account, and I check it a couple of times a day. Kinda e-mail junky <img src=/S/boxedin.gif border=0 alt=boxedin width=25 height=20>

But it is nice to know, I have things back to normal, and I am getting the replies and the Digest messages have resumed after I re-subscribed.

    Thanks for your help.

    Yes!!! I think this is their way of <img src=/S/stop.gif border=0 alt=stop width=26 height=24> combating "<font color=red>SPAM</font color=red>"!!!

I am not sure if it will work, because I know a lot of e-mail messages, legitimate one I am talking about, are generated via automation.

Here in the US there is an effort to start a "Do Not Call" list of phone numbers that belong to people who don't want commercial entities to call them and pitch their products at dinner time <img src=/S/bif.gif border=0 alt=bif width=70 height=28>.

This, no doubt, is going to put a lot of strain on e-mail messaging, and already I hear news about this particular effect.

We'll see how this plays out. God help us all.
