    Keyboard shortcut for 'switch headers/footers' (Win2K/Word 2000 9.0.6926 SP3)

    I like to avoid use of the mouse. I can get the header footer option up with Alt-V for view, then H for Header/Footer. Any quicker way to get to make a switch to footer than Alt-S, right arrow (x 9), enter?! (in fact, I use a self made macro, but I was just wondering)

    Happy 4th all you in the US.

    There is no built-in shortcut key for this, but you can easily assign one without creating a macro:
    <UL><LI>Select Tools | Customize...
    <LI>Click the Keyboard... button.
    <LI>Select View in the Categories list
    <LI>To be able to switch between header and footer, select GoToHeaderFooter in the Commands list; to be able to switch between main document and footer, select ViewFooter.
    <LI>Click in the box labeled Press new shortcut key, and press the new shortcut key.
    <LI>You will see if your shortcut is already assigned. The new shortcut will override the old one. If you seldom or never use the old one, it shouldn't be a problem. Alt+Ctrl+G is not used in a default installation, so that might be a reasonable one for Go to footer.
    <LI>Click Assign.
    <LI>Click Close (twice)[/list]HTH

    Use your up and down arrow keys to quickly switch between the header and the footer (once you have opened Header/Footer with Alt+V,H).

    Every toolbar button that you can modify has a command "ID" value that you can execute. So, for example, your macro could be simplified to this:

    commandbars.FindControl(id:=237).Execute 'switch from header to footer or vice versa

    Of course, if the header or footer is not already showing, you'll get an error, so a better approach might be:

    commandbars.FindControl(id:=762).Execute 'run View > Header and Footer
    commandbars.FindControl(id:=237).Execute 'switch from header to footer or vice versa

    Definitely not pretty. Here's another way to look at it. The code the macro recorder creates for this sequence is as follows:

    <pre>' Recorded code for View > Header and Footer
    If ActiveWindow.View.SplitSpecial <> wdPaneNone Then
    ActiveWindow.Panes(2).Close
    End If
    If ActiveWindow.ActivePane.View.Type = wdNormalView Or ActiveWindow. _
    ActivePane.View.Type = wdOutlineView Then
    ActiveWindow.ActivePane.View.Type = wdPrintView
    End If
    ActiveWindow.ActivePane.View.SeekView = wdSeekCurrentPageHeader

    ' Recorded code for clicking the go to footer button
    If Selection.HeaderFooter.IsHeader = True Then
    ActiveWindow.ActivePane.View.SeekView = wdSeekCurrentPageFooter
    Else
    ActiveWindow.ActivePane.View.SeekView = wdSeekCurrentPageHeader
    End If</pre>

    Really, if you want a general purpose macro that goes to the footer rather than the header, you just need to change the line with the bolded text to:

    <pre>ActiveWindow.ActivePane.View.SeekView = wdSeekCurrentPageFooter</pre>

    Well, it's "general purpose" if you're not already viewing the header (or footer, hmmm, not 100% sure about this), 'cause then it often closes that view and returns you to the document. Hmmm...

    Does any of this help or inspire?

    Can you be more specific? Where do things go wrong?

    Hans

    Problem has been solved, don't know what happened but when I assigned the shortcut keys, it did not toggle back and forth from the header to the footer, afterwards the header and footer toolbar went on holiday. Had to do a fix and reinstall the H&F toolbar. We have had a number of problems with that particular toolbar disappearing or not having the full compliment of icons on it.

    But it is working now. Thanks to you anyway.

    Regards
